The Sauna Airline - FINNAIR A350 AirLounge Business Class Helsinki to Delhi

Published 2023-09-10
They're crazy, the Finns! Or are they not?
Finnair has installed in their Airbus A350s, what is probably the most unusual business class seat in the world: seats for long-haul flights without an adjustable backrest and therefore without a bed at the push of a button. How can that be comfortable? We take a look at it on a Finnair Business Class flight from Helsinki to Delhi.

Best review of the Finnair Business Class I have seen. .

Dear Sir, Thank you for your great review - Herzlichen Dank! Have done the HEL DEL sector six times over the past 12 months: A330 with the old configuration and A330 with the upgraded interior plus once with A350 with the upgraded cabin, and find the new seat a very bold move, which seems to get either very positive or very negative feedback. There is a lot of personal space but I find the new lounge seat quite awkward and always seem to fail in finding a comfortable sleeping position. Maybe it's a personal problem only. However, love the Delhi based cabin crews on this sector, they are absolutely adorable with their great motivation and commitment to world-class service; some of them are ex-Qatar staff and it really shows. Moreover, I love your comment about catering: Finnair does seem to be a "Diet Airline" - look at the hot breakfast with a spoonful of everything, do you find the hot breakfast plate half full or half empty? The dinner is not too big either, and nibbling chocolates and nuts overnight is not a good idea for your health nor your figure. Finnair should really look into their catering: the food is OK in general but the portions are very, very small and the mid-flight snacks are too scarce compared to their world-class competitors. The official explanation is food waste and attempts to reduce waste, however, this is a lousy excuse for not providing proper meals for customers who pay full price in J class. Thank you for pinpointing the lousy Finnair catering in your review!

What a great report! We're looking at Finnair or Swiss, for a long haul, next year. We were worried about sleeping, as my wife has a spinal fusion, and needs to lay comfortably, on long haul. Thanks for a great review.

Always love your reports, and the sixties documentary music was great, normally featuring a plummy voiceover in UK.

great content as usual, well done. Toss up for me between Finnair and EVA from London to Bangkok business class, difficult choice!!!!

I would say new business is definitely more relaxing experience and of course feels more modern. You are more enclosed and private with the new seats, and you have more space. Sleeping is just a better experience with the new seats because of more space and being more enclosed. Being on that semi recline position and being able to reach the screen was just a better experience with the old seats. With the new business seat my 182cm torso needed to reach for the screen (you can use controller but I prefer not, especially for games). On the other side on the new business you can example comfortably sit cross legged with your back supported. Something you did not have room on the old seats. On the new business I spent quite a bit cross legged watching the screen and even when eating. Found that to be comfy for me. Seating is essentially one big continuous cozy flat surface once you rise the leg support all the way up. Especially with the now longer Asian flights due to Russian's airspace closure I do absolutely prefer the new seating due to better sleeping experience, but still if it would have slightly reclining seat it would be 10/10.

Completely agree that surcharges for seat selection in business are absurd. It should just be first come, first served. I recently gave up on a 10kE business booking with BA (For whole family) because they wanted an extra 500 to choose seats.

Great TR, enjoyed a lot and subscribed! It sounds Finnair's new seat is liked generally, it feels like a private cocoon, with plenty of space. But didn't you get a mattress? It should be there on (all?) long haul routes. Yeah their food portions tend to be on the small side. True, the closed RUS airspace gives Finnair serious headaches but they are doing surprisingly well at the moment, making profit. One reason is they have made several wet lease deals with other airlines, such as feeding Doha from the Nordic region for Qatar Airways. Next winter they'll even fly BKK/SIN - SYD for Qantas. They have also operated long hauls for the LH group (Discover Airlines), Germany-USA. P.S Yes, I participate in the raffle :)
