Jason Kostal Modified Dreadnought guitar; ex- Somogyi workshop

Published 2012-08-20
Here's a few clips of a 3-week old Jason Kostal modified dreadnought guitar; European spruce over African blackwood back and sides. Really, really nice guitar - I've done a few different things here to try and show it's versatility. I've waited nearly a year and a half for this, and flogged some nice guitars to be able to afford it: it's well worth it and I'm enjoying playing it!

There's no reverb or any effects on this - it's just the guitar and a (steaming hot 30 degrees!) room.

Cheers,
Steve

This is a fine example of getting what you pay for. You can see the fantastic finish on this guitar. But the set up has to be as superb as the materials and craftsmanship used. It sounds divine, and by the way you're playing it, I bet you've hardly put it down since it arrived home. The response it returns to your playing is awesome. I would love to hear it a year from now. Thanks for the video.

An outstanding demonstration of this fine instrument. So kind of you to share your skill and deft touch. Much appreciated all the way around.

Well that was a nice start to the day. Thunderous bass on the first piece (which was? I enjoyed the lovely harmonies in that piece). Very well balanced to my ears, and seems to take the different tunings very well. Very nice slide playing- something I've never been able to get right! The low C tuning sounds glorious. Nice job Steve.

Ta Keith - yes - the heat was incredible. Much cooler now so I'm hoping to get another couple done soon. Thanks for the very kind words.

What a happy boy you must be Steve! Great vid, and, like Robbie, I especially enjoyed the slide tune. Hot room and hot playing!

wow, that was quick Robbie - I left this to upload overnight and haven't even seen it myself yet so v. nice to wake to a comment already. Thanks!

Thanks for showing us the Kostal! A beauty! Doesn't seem too Somogyi like, but nonetheless gorgeously toned. Can't wait to see what guitars you're playing in your other videos.

Cheers Phil - I appreciate that, especially coming from a player like you.

Yes - it would be great to meet up again. I'm sure we'll do so. Thanks for the very kind words Mark.

Thanks for the kind words. I do think it's rather Somogyi-like but that's a n=1 experiment for me, having just played a single wenge Somogyi MD. It was a spectacular guitar though and, if I'm honest, precipitated the commission from Jason.

Thanks ++. The strings are D'Addario EJ19 "bluegrass". Basically a "light top" with a "medium" bottom, so good for dropped tunings.

Sounding amazing... great touch as usual. Wot, no Weiss? And also a bit chilly for a Kostal!

Ha ha - I WILL post a vid of me playing the Weiss Ciacona, on a nylon string...in about 8 months, which is how long it will take me to get my fingers around it; and I've already been playing the piece 2 months - very difficult!
