I would suggest that Gilmours' greatest live "Comfortably Numb", song ending guitar solo, was at Pink Floyds' 1994 Pulse Concert at Earls Court in London. It's one of the last of the 111 performances of Pink Floyds 94 "The Division Bell" World Tour. The tour was from March to October, in 68 cities, in 17 countries worldwide.

David Gilmour and Mark Knopfler. The only guitarists who can pull anyone’s heartstrings right out of their chests. GOAT!

According to a guitar magazine years ago, David Gilmour was deemed The Undisputed Dean of the Compound Bend and has practically perfect note placement. He admits that he never was a fast playing guitar player but I'd rather hear him play than other guitarist.

David Gilmour is my favorite of all time! He can bring tears to my eyes!

"His solos serves the song". Truer words were never spoken. Gilmour's solos are as much an extension of the lyrics, as they are guitar solos. It doesn't just add to the song, it completes it in so many ways.
  • The Pulse concert Pink Floyd was on fire. This solo is one of his greatest solos recorded. That said, you really should listen to and watch Gilmour perform "Sorrow". There are two lead singers of Pink Floyd Gilmour and Gilmour's Strat.

This Live at Pompeii 2016 is my favourite version, harder edged than earlier recordings, also the sheer enthusiasm of Steve Distanislao on drums beefs up the performance, when you see guys still enjoying playing their music after so many years it shines through in the sound.

One of the greatest bit of guitar knowledge I've heard Dave say that it's not how many notes you play it's how you play a single note.

David Gilmour is a legitimate Living Guitar God. The man can do more with one note than most can do with an entire fret board. A bit of trivia. The guitar strap hes using is one of Jimi Hendrix's Gilmours wife bought it for him for his birthday. You should react to the Pulse performances
  • David plays with emotion and feelings, almost like he’s telling a story.

This one solo has always brought me to tears. Literally. The emotion it pulls out of you is fantastic.

I was one of the 2000 or so people in the crowd for this performance in Pompeii; a birthday present to myself and one of the most special and memorable gigs I've ever been to. Great to see that David is working on a new album due to come out next year. I personally don't think that it was his best live solo (the sound mix was also very substandard on this particular rendering) but music's such a subjective thing, many are always going to disagree. I'm just glad he's still out there making music for the sake of making music – he doesn't need the money, that's for sure.

IMO, the Pulse concert version is better visual display, but any version is greatly appreciated. Thanks for the reactions.

Dave is the living embodiment of emotion over speed.
  • Gilmour uses DOUBLE COMPRESSION as well as CHORUS AND DELAY to get that CLEAN yet DISTORTED Lead Guitar tone. He delivers what the song calls for. No more and no less which is a VERY FINE LINE. THAT is the definition of EPIC.
  • "I don't know if you've heard this foggy sort of thing, but when the inspiration strikes, i can get down with the best of them" David Gilmour, Blue Light
  • @ubermac85
That legendary black Strat! If I could have one guitar LOL.
  • Mesmerizing isn't it? 😀 And the man was 70+ years old rocking the house down.
  • There are a number of live performances of the song to be found on youtube and the Pulse solo is truly mega BUT I cannot agree that it is the best because all of the different performances I have seen so far are perfect in their own different ways. What I'm trying to say is that I find them all truly memorable and exceptional, and actually there are aspects of this solo that I prefer to the Pulse concert. All of this is 'in my humble opinion' of course!
  • Both solos on this song are the greatest guitar solos ever recorded. Period.
