Aurora Borealis as seen in Northern Indiana - May, 2024

Published 2024-05-11
Images in this video were taken in rural Elkhart County, Indiana on the evening of May 11 - May 12, 2024 over a period of about 55 minutes. I chose this location because it avoided the worst of city lights, and the farm fields gave a clear view of the sky without obstruction from trees. When I arrived shortly before midnight, my eyes saw nothing unusual in the northern sky. Honestly, my first thought was this was a big waste of time when I could have been sleeping. But I took some photos anyway, and they really didn't show anything. The first image I included does show a hint of green on the horizon. Gradually, the colors brightened and expanded. A passing car provided some foreground light in the second image, illuminating my car. In the sixth image, I was lucky enough to also capture a meteor. The colors were at their brightest for the seventh and eighth images, then the colors began to quickly fade from the sky.

From where I was, I could definitely see the aurora borealis with my naked eyes, but only when it was at its brightest. Green was the easiest color to see. Also, my camera picked up much more in the way of colors and details than my eyes on their own could see on their own.

All in all, it was an awesome experience. I'm glad I gave it some time when I arrived and saw nothing in the sky. This was the first time I had ever witnessed the northern lights - I'll never forget the experience!
