Sara Drew, a conservator at Center Art Studio in New York City, explains how she restored a 180-year-old painting. Henry Wilkin's portrait of English opera singer Madame Lucia Elizabeth Vestris has accumulated thick layers of dirt and tobacco smoke on the surface after hanging in a Manhattan social club for years. The painting also has paint loss due to overcleaning by the last person who restored it and has tears that need to be repaired. Sara walks us through the steps of the restoration and reveals the finished restoration.

  • Imagine being able to tell somebody that the the reason why you couldn’t go to the movies on Tuesday was because you were cleaning the Mona Lisa
  • Dude imagine looking at the dust, like damn that dust is older then anyone currently alive
  • I'm sure the artists from way back then would very much appreciate knowing their artwork is being preserved and delicately dealt with.
  • @Ajax-120
I love how the varnish makes these paintings look completely brand new.
  • Holy shit, old paintings DON'T naturally look yellow? I always assumed that the paints of the time just had a yellow tint to them. Wow.
  • At the end when it's revealed how beautiful the painting looks after the restoration is complete, it really displays the beauty of the woman in the painting, and the way she smiling at the end, it's almost like she's saying "thank you". 😊
  • This was both calming and breathtaking at the same time. Imagine yourself saying, "I'm going to strip the varnish off this 200-year-old painting, and out it back together like new." She did this as just another day at the office, NBD. Just amazing.
  • Oof "Retouching what the previous restorer over cleaned" Shade thrown
  • imagine 180 years from now, this painting will be professionally restored again
  • this brings a tear to my eye. as an artist, the thought of someone restoring my work decades from now warms my heart.
  • If anyone is curious, the music pieces were gymnopedie no. 1 by Eric Satie and Prelude in c Major by J. Bach😊 great video!
  • “Sorry can’t hang out tonight I’m just cleaning the starry night”
  • I love how these jobs just exist, they are incredible and the experience must be beautiful.
  • @c.rvmance
This process is just so beautiful. To think there are people out there who care so deeply about such historical pieces is so touching. Imagine what the artist would think. I’d be brought to tears.
  • @jaele2953
Imagine being a regular old vacuum that gets to suck up 2 centuries worth of dust. What an honor that must be.
  • This job would be terrifying for me, I'd be so worried I would accidently cause a real life Mr Bean ultimate disaster movie type accident
  • There’s something incredibly satisfying about seeing this painting cleaned and restored in such a professional manner.
