A good point made by a viewer is to make sure that whatever modifications you make to your safety chains are the same strength as the chain. My trailer is small and light, so don't just use what I did.

A friend of mine owns a tow company he got a call from a man to meet him on the side of the highway to recover a trailer that had a flat tire. My friend arrives to find a trail with 3 motorcycles on it missing a trailer wheel. the man claims he pulled it to far and the wheel was ruined. And he is in his wife's car so they need to get the trailer on the roll back truck and home as fast as they can. As my friend was winching the trailer up onto the bed the REAL owner shows up. Police were called bad guy drives off, my friend gave the tag number to the police, thief went to jail. My friend now requires proof of ownership before he moves anything.

I hate thieves with a passion, can't leave anything out unlocked anymore nowadays...

It's sad that the professional thrives think your property is theirs. The problem is the court system treats crimes of opportunity as low level crime. I'm full timing, my life is in that RV trailer. We'll be boondocking soon where we will be away from our RV all day. The safety chain theft I never thought about...Now you have me thinking.

I once talked to a guy that used to own a large RV/Camper dealership. He used to fill out 5-10 insurance claims PER DAY for people's stolen trailers- all shapes and sizes from utility trailers to giant 5th-wheel RV's. Those cordless grinders can buzz through just about any lock you can put on it. As stated in the video, make them look for the easy targets is the best you can do.

You can ad a high decibel vibration alarm also. It's enough to startle anybody and can be heard for miles in some cases.
  • @jeepcollector91
If you leave the trailer unattended in the wilderness you could set up a trail camera to see how often the trailer is messed with while you are away and possibly help you recover the trailer if stolen.

I saw a trailer at a storage unit that had a sticker that read "Nothing in this trailer is worth your life" with a gun silhouette above that. GPS is a good tool to have on your trailer, off-road vehicle, motorcycle, etc.

Run a chain through the wheel then around the axle. Usually can do that on both sides to slow them down more. Don't use one chain for both. Use two separate chains and locks.

It is good to see you have taken steps to deal with the problem. I know we should not have this concern but we do and as you say we can only make it hard for them.
  • Thank you sir for taking the time to educate us on a subject that most people dont know about or even stop to find out
  • @tangobayus
Making yourself a hard target is one key to security.
  • @BarakTheWonderer
I was just thinking about this, this past week! I came to all the same preparations as you except for the chains. This will be very helpful to many people, thanks for doing it! :)

Great video with some good tips. It's a shame what we have to do to keep other people from destroying what we work so hard to get.
  • @nesbittjohn
Wow you really covered all the bases. I hadn't even thought of some of those workarounds. Thank you very much for all the insights.
  • @lizphoenix1826
Very informative video. Thank you for taking time to give us pointers that are extremely useful.
  • @justmona9647
I hadn't thought about those types of deterrence like the tire boot and locking lug nuts. Both are good ideas. I can't cut the chains off but I can wrap them around and put a lock on them. You gave me some great ideas! Thanks👍
  • It's the times we live in. I have a home alarm and one on the camper. Happy travels 🚘
