Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is Tim Burton's reboot of 1971's Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, which had a mixed reception on release. Looking back at it now, was it as good as critics say? Or was it just another weird Johnny Depp movie?

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - 2005
Based on the beloved Roald Dahl tale, this comedic and fantastical film follows young Charlie Bucket (Freddie Highmore) and his Grandpa Joe (David Kelly) as they join a small group of contest winners who get to tour the magical and mysterious factory of eccentric candy maker Willy Wonka (Johnny Depp). Aided by his diminutive Oompa Loompa workers (Deep Roy), Wonka has a hidden motivation for the tour, one that he will reveal only after the children in the group show their true colors.

Its quite normal to lift up and move our houses in Britain, how else could we colonise so easily.
  • @darthbiz2095
Fun fact: The toothpaste company Charlie's dad works for is called Smylex, which is the same company that made the Joker's laughing gas in the 1989 Batman movie (also directed by Tim Burton).

Christopher Lee saying lollipops in the most intimidating way is a highlight of the movie.
  • The burning animatronics was genuinely nightmare fuel for me as a kid. Like I couldn’t watch this movie for years because of that one scene.
  • @Ryotaiku
One of the best lines in the book that isn't in either of the movies is when the kids ask why the chocolate factory grows vegetables. "I eat them! You don't think I live on candy alone, do you?"

My fellow toaster oven fans, this is a petition for Microwave Society to watch Horton Hears a Who. Only if they wish to, of course. I believe that their humor would be a lovely pairing with the movie's chaos. Thank you for your time. - The Toaster Oven on the top shelf in the basement. (Someone please help me. It's dark in here. it's actually hilarious that in this movie there is not one, but TWO houses that are inexplicably moved from one location like a cut & paste
  • 11:08 this scene actually started my fear of animatronics, BEFORE Fnaf. i was 8 when i saw this.

Lessons I’ve learned from this video: Wonkas factory is the only factory in the world that mixes their chocolate with waterfalls
  • @dean2_
Is it odd that Willy wonka and the chocolate factory focuses more on Charlie but Charlie and the chocolate factory focuses more on Willy wonka
  • @calebwashere
Why does Willy look like he could be related to Tick Tock?
  • @kaibird542
This movie is actually closer to the book than the original. I’ve read the book, and though the character design for Wonka is off, the other scenes are pretty close to the book

14:27 from what I was told is Tim Burton trained all of the squirrels to take the shells of the walnuts I believe it cause it sounds like something he would do
  • "We're sending Charlie to space!" Surprisingly, that's roughly the plot of the follow up book, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. Charlie and Wonka take the elevator to a space hotel, where Vermicious Knids have taken up residence... for a general idea if how that would look, see The Fifth Element and the sequence with Phloston Paradise.

It's probably the closer movie to the original book, of the two movies. The original story is also an allegory for the Garden of Eden, people in the town used to live in a veritable paradise, until someone took knowledge out of the factory, at which point, Willy kicked the humans out and started using an unexplained work force to do everything with methods no one can understand. Also also: If Charlie hadn't bought that last chocolate bar, someone else in town would have, it just might have taken longer since everyone thought the last ticket was already found.

Props to this movie for teaching kids about cannibalism.

I was watching this while eating cereal, and after hearing the phrase "italicized house" I had to clean my phone and a lot of the table because of the force that the milk left my mouth. Love it. 3:50
