How to Travel with Medicine

Published 2021-11-20
Are you nervous about traveling with medication? Today I will share tips on traveling with medicine and how to pack them in your carry-on bag to avoid any problems when you pass security.

Only traveling with a carry-on? Make sure to check out my video:
How to Pack Toiletries, Makeup and Medicine in a carry on bag:    • How to Pack Toiletries, Makeup and Me...

Tips mentioned in my video

1. Pack your medication in your carry-on bag instead of checked luggage.

2. Any prescription medication is exempt from the liquid restrictions and does not have to be placed in your 3-1-1 liquids bag. It can also exceed the 3 ounces (100ml) limit.

3. I recommend you place all your liquid medication, as well as any medicated creams and gels, into a clear bag that you can pull out of your carry-on when passing security.

4. All your dry meds like pills and powders can be left in your bag when passing security.

5.Leave medication in its original packaging to avoid any problems.
The same goes for all prescription medication.

6.Check Air Transport Security rules before traveling to avoid any problems.

7. If traveling with disabilities or medical conditions, visit TSA website fill out appropriate forms: www.tsa.gov/travel/special-procedures

8.Make sure you bring a doctor's note when traveling with complicated or more obscure prescription medication.

9.Contact the foreign government of the country you plan to visit before departing to make sure the medicines you intend to bring are allowed into the country.

Number 1 tip should be check the websites of the countries you will be traveling to. They may require preapproval to bring your drug/cpap, etc…into their country (this takes weeks to get)and there may be a limit to amount of medication…in spite of what this lady says. In some countries you cannot bring some drugs AT ALL so you may not be able to go there. Plus some OTC meds not allowed. Number 2 tip: put meds you need in your primary carry on and not the suitcase carry on. In case they run out of room and force you to check it.

This was super helpful Alex. I would be traveling to Spain and have a prescribed set of Pills by my Doctor but they are not in the Original container. Instead my doctor has split them into multiple Plastic sachets for Fever/Diarrhoea/Allergy with a Prescribed Medication along with a handwritten note on them. Would this suffice any security checks at Spain?

What about an inhaler for asthma/cough related. Do I have to pack that in the 3-1-1 bag or can I just have it somewhere else in my bag? I’m not checking a bag by the way.
