My Failure as a Superman (AKA Dealing With Anxiety)

As men, we're taught to be tough, to keep it together, to never let them see you sweat. But what happens when the armor cracks, and you start falling apart? In this video, Mike shares how anxiety led to a lifelong struggle with migraines, and offers several practices that have helped him deal with stress and anxiety in much more redemptive, transformative ways.

Philippians 4:6-7
6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

CORRECTION: In the video, Mike says this passage from Jesus is in Matthew 5. It's actually in Matthew 6.

Matthew 6:25-34
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? 28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

  • So good! I sent this to a bunch of guys and a few family members. Your vulnerability and management strategies were so helpful. I loved the advice from Jesus and Paul as well, and your comment, "follow the formula." Trusting the Lord with particularly stressful situations has brought me peace.

Egads! That was quite a download and it really made me curious. Being present, inviting God into your anxiety, things to ask for based on Scripture. Thanks for sharing those hard-won lessons, and the honesty about how we are all still learning about this on the journey. Really unpacking what you shared here would be a powerful book idea to add to your list!

Great reminders, Mike. Thanks. Something I've never done before but took notes on was your explanation of “seeking God’s kingdom” during times of anxiety: When I’m anxious, I can turn to God and say, I just want to know you better, right now, in this anxiety I feel. I want to know you better. I want to understand how you’re thinking of this situation. I want to know what your thoughts are toward me right now.
