    C# is no longer proprietary. the compiler, SDK, ,apis are now open source. dotnet core is an open source framework which works on Mac Linux and windows.

    One should not forget Ruby for backend web programming (he mentions it later, but not at the beginning). Node.js and Go are also interesting. Pearl is deprecated, but still a thing.
