In a remote village nestled in Syria s picturesque Oalamoun mountains, resides a small Aramaic community. It is one of the last and it is devoted to preserving Aramaic: the language that Jesus spoke.

Protecting this 3000-year-old language has united Malula s residents: Christians and Muslims are like brothers in this town, says local resident Ibrahim Kamar. Whilst Mel Gibson s The Passion of Christ has revived interest in the language, fears that Aramaic is dying out continue. Malula, where the orphans must recite in Aramaic, is one of the last bastions for a language Mother Superior Savaf describes as a gift from God.

I'm from a village in Iraq and I just realized now that I speak the same language Jesus did. This is officially the coolest day of my life.

There’s a lot you can learn when your brain isn’t consumed by social media.

I am so impressed with this town, Malullah. May God preserve the language Jesus our Saviour, spoke. What a blessing!

May god save Syria and its people with its nativity. Bless them.
  • There are TONS of people from northern Iraq that also speak Aramaic… many are of the Syriac or Eastern Orthodox Church. My brother’s wife is from Baghdad. Her father is working to teach and preserve Syriac and Biblical Aramaic. Sameer Hache, if you’re from Baghdad, Iraq and are Eastern Orthodox and see this comment you probably know of him. There’s plenty of folks from Baghdad and further north that speak Aramaic, especially in Erbil and the Kurdistan portion of Iraq.

The reason why they get along is because they are Real christians and Real muslims.

They should put their Aramaic lessons online somewhere, where it can be preserved forever.

Such a beautiful language and a beautiful town with beautiful people.

Its a very musical lovely language, and unlike anything else I have ever heard. These amazing villagers should be so proud, especially the young still learning it fluently. And it's so wonderful to see such closely related religions living so peacefully together in a beautiful healthy way.

The reason this little town gets along so well, unlike the rest of the world is simple, less politics and mutual respect for each other.

I’m a native Arabic speaker, and can confirm that Aramaic sounds a looooot like Arabic. I have to listen very carefully to understand some sentences, but overall the pronunciation is very similar.
  • @091lsm._
I'm neither arabic nor aramaic speaker but I'm arabic learner. it's quite fascinating when I was hearing them speaking in aramaic it sounds like I'm hearing arabic😍❤️ I wish I could visit their village someday... Love from 🇮🇩 to 🇸🇾
