When bleeding is present, our blood needs to transform from a liquid to a gel in an attempt to slow and stop the bleeding. This process of hemostasis is a complex one and the most complex part of this is what we refer to as the clotting cascade. The cascade allows the rapid conversion of Fibrinogen to Fibrin, a crucial component to forming a stable clot. The cascade involves multiple steps and enlists multiple helpers to "cascade" into a large volume of fibrin. We have both the Intrinsic and Extrinsic Pathways that both feed into the Common Pathway and result in clot formation.

Some tips to help remember : PT = tennis (played inside) = intrinsic pathway versus aPTT = table tennis (ping-pong, played outside) = extrinsic pathway Common pathway = 10, 5, 2, 1 = like $ currency Intrinsic = numbers 8 through 12 (except 10) Thank you so much ICU Advantage! You have greatly helped this pharmacist prep for hospital residency!
