Several universities in the United States have launched research programs on the spread of misinformation on social media. They’ve been repeatedly sued by organizations on the political right who argue that what some scientists call misinformation isn’t misinformation at all. I have the summary for you.

Imagine if Margarine companies paid researchers to prove butter was bad for you, or cigarette manufactures paid for research showing they were good for you... oh wait a minute.

  • It was a sad day when our school district decided to cancel the Critical Thinking class we has as an elective in High School. Too many parents complained about the uncomfortable questions they were asked.

Oh boy, Idiocracy was a warning, not just a movie.

One of the problems that we have in the U.S. is the failure of so many to realize that actual freedom requires personal and social responsibility. Part of that responsibility is to make the effort — and it is an effort to sort through all the noise — to actually be informed rather than just being told what to think by one's echo chamber of choice. While there are legitimate areas of disagreement, abusing the freedom we have by being too lazy to be informed is irresponsible and puts us on a path to losing it. What's going on over here can get quite embarrassing.

The problem is that salacious misinformation sells way more advertising than objective truth.
  • The main problem with ANY correction of information or labeling information as misinformation is, WHO gets to decide what is misinformation and if they are biased.

Finding an uncounted mail-in ballot stuck in a mailbox is not going to change anything, but finding over 200,000 uncounted ballots in a warehouse could change things, so is that misinformation or is that evidence. When I moved, I checked to see if I had been taken off the voting rolls, I had not been. I immediately informed the register of voters that I was no longer in that district.

Never underestimate the power of Stupid in large groups.
  • The best solution would be to ensure that everyone that everyone has grounding in science by the time they finish school and are capable of thinking critically. It is very, very bad that most of the really powerful people in the world have no clear idea of how science works, while to most of the rest it is magic.

I`m an American, and nobody is suing to remain uninformed. The problem with this idea of misinformation is who is to decide what is, and is not misinformation. Are the Republicans or Democrats going to make that decision ? I want to hear all sides of a debate so I can decide for myself what is right or wrong.
  • Just what do you expect when for the past forty or fifty years the American public education system has been teaching to standardized tests and not really having the students learn anything, especially not learning critical thinking.
  • The most difficult thing in the world is forcing oneself to search for information that contradicts something you hold to be true.

It is shocking to see the level of stupidity we have reached in the USA...all in the name of political extremist...sad times indeed!
  • @Omnicypher001
if misinformation becomes a crime, truth becomes a crime by being labeled as misinformation. the best we can do is debate all ideas, and not punish people for being wrong, beyond laughing at them or respectfully disagreeing.

Censorship with power is never a good idea, even whith the best intentions. Inquisition and dictatorships are good examples.
