His inspiration is a charismatic individual, whose own travels through this region, two thousand years ago, changed the world forever - Paul the Apostle. On this journey, David seeks to uncover how an obscure Jewish sect from the edge of the Roman Empire shattered the world of the classical gods and challenged the might of Caesar, to become the dominant force in Western civilization. The catalyst for this social and religious revolution was a 5'8" powerhouse called Paul. After Jesus, Paul is the most significant figure in the history of Christianity and the Western world. He was the first international ambassador of this new faith, catapulting Jesus' radical message of salvation from Judea to the wider Mediterranean world. In the year 40 CE, when Paul began his missionary enterprise, there were only about 1000 Christians throughout the whole Roman Empire. But just 300 years later, there were more than six million. It was Paul, more than anyone else, who was responsible for this explosion of Christianity, in his role as apostle, theologian, man of letters and inveterate traveller. The profound issues with which he wrestled - society, faith and salvation - still fuel debate today. Paul's radical thinking was dangerous and controversial then - and remains so now. Shot in stunning locations in Israel, Turkey, Greece, Italy and Malta, these ground-breaking programmes explore both the ancient archaeological evidence for Paul's journey and its' contemporary resonances. On this journey, David's personal mission is to discover what motivated Paul. His aim is to work out how Paul triumphed over the Roman Empire in a real 'clash of civilizations', and succeeded in leaving a legacy that endures to this day.

  • That part at 10:40 when Suchet asks the "scribe" to write and read back that letter excerpt in Greek and Sir David gets LIT hearing Paul's words as Paul actually spoke them... boy, oh, boy, that alone is worth the price of admission!

It’s a pity you didn’t elaborate on the time when St. Paul was in Malta, he is a patron saint of the island and during his time here he converted the Maltese people. There are stories of him on the island.

I really loved this documentary as well as the first one. It's thorough and pulls in delightful little stories and real places. David Suchet is the best host.
  • I always want to cry when I listen to Paul’s words. I don’t know why. It touches me 😢 I’m also following my calling on his footsteps. Praise the Lord. May you all be blessed.

  • @BobHarvey.
The documentaries of Peter and Paul are well done. So it would be great if they would make a documentary about John that is if David Suchet is the narrator and host.
  • Thank you David Suchet for this informative and moving tribute to the apostle, Paul. His letters to the early Christians make more sense to me now.

The part where Paul says women should be silent in the church according to law, he doesn’t mean in the literal sense of not making a peep. He means in terms of making any challenges to male clergy or asking questions out of turn. So when he goes on to recount them praying this isn’t a contradiction. Of course they are expected to pray allowed in church. That end monologue had me in tears almost, the fantastic David Suchet. Great documentary.

this documentary is awesome, the quotes of Paul, and the information, and historical facts, with the whole re-tracing of his steps, really nicely made. I am going to watch again with my parents once I tell them about it.
  • I'm not sure what I think about Paul. But I love David Suchet. He makes this programme. He has an exceptional voice. And perhaps I feel a little closer to Paul.

The remark at minute 40 is absolutely amazing and illustrative. I congratulate mr. Suchet for this formidable effort.
  • I'm not religious but St. Paul certainly was a man who had a big and long lasting impact on world history. He changed the world as much as any single person has done.
