  • You definitely have to visit Mexico. I have seen many videos of yours and I have noticed that your cooking style is very focused on Italian and homemade. The essence of Mexican gastronomy is found precisely in the homemade, and I am a believer that Mexicans and Italians have many cultural and social similarities that have a strong impact on our gastronomy. If you visit Oaxaca or Yucatán I can assure you by putting my hands on fire that whatever you eat you will end up loving it. I hope you read my comment.

This might be your most impressive recipe yet, the amount of work and time management put into this is spectacular, plus the marriage of flavours. Stunning work, can't wait to try them and floor my guests

I love that you give the history behind this! I'm Catholic but not Italian so I was unfamiliar with this tradition! For our Christmas Eve, we went to the Christmas Vigil Mass and got back home around 10pm. Usually it was just sandwiches for a late dinner. Then Christmas day was the prime rib dinner!
  • Masterful! As a New York Italian, I too was not brought up with the notion that seven fishes were part of Christmas Eve. in reality, we probably had more than seven, but never was there a mention of 'seven.' I loved the comment about cheese on fish sauce. Cheese goes perfectly with seafood sauce and anyone who subscribes to the taboo of not eating cheese with fish really knows nothing about cooking or eating..
  • I come from a Sicilian American family but I didn’t actually grow up around them so I didn’t get to celebrate growing up. Now that I have my own kids, I’ve been trying to incorporate Italian traditions into our holidays. I love that you talk about the history of the celebration. Happy Holidays🎄

thank you this wonderful video. as a jewish person who keeps kosher i can eat most of these dishes. branzino is a kosher fish. the antipasti is elegant and looks delicious. salmon and tuna are kosher fishes. the clams, mussels, scallops, and shrimp are not kosher. however i can use kosher shrimp ( whitefish shaped and spiced to taste like shrimp- dyna-sea brand with kosher authorization symbol) with a passata for that dish too. good explanation on pot/pan handles. before the inquisition southern italy had many italians who were jews, they were there there since 70 a.d. rabbi barbara aiello has a very interesting video about that. i will look for more of your recipes and forward your videos to friends. your channel is definitely not just another cooking show. it is a very special one. buon natale!
  • @gilmourwaters
Oh hell yea! The feast! A mainstay in every Italian household in Brooklyn! My wife and I still do that at Christmas time ! Even though I’m not in New York anymore 😂
  • @ISDTony
Dude. Chef John rules. Pretty sure he’s influenced all YT chefs in one way or another. ❤️
  • @DadGotThis
My mother and grandma did the feast of the 7 fishes every year when I was a kid. Now that they are gone the tradition ended. This is an amazing twist on it that sounds delicious. Great job and thanks for the great content.

I think I hopped on board this channel when you were around 10k subs. It's astonishing what you've accomplished in, what feels like, a blink of an eye (4 years!). You, my friend, have crushed it. Take some time this holiday season to savor and appreciate your success. It is well deserved.
  • Had no clue this was a thing but it's a fantastic idea for Catholics, especially when Christmas Eve falls on a Friday
  • This is the greatest cooking video of all times for me. I don't think I could do all of this all at once in my tiny kitchen as a student but it's wild how much you taught me about sea food in less than 30 mins! One day I will throw this feast and invite over my best friends!
  • @tonkabear2369
I like how you give shout outs for things you learned from others.
  • Been watching videos from this channel for awhile. I'm predicting this guy will be the next Anthony Bourdain without the crazy stuff. I'm obsessed
  • @ivagal11
Amazing. I’d honestly be too tired after all this prep to sit n entertain guests. However, I’m truly inspired. Great video and amazing job. I can almost taste it.
  • Your videos always bring me back to my Italian god mom rest her soul ❤
  • @2Wheels_NYC
So so fantastic! I grew up with Christmas Eve being bigger than The Christmas Day celebration. The Feast of the Seven Fishes has been part of my youth, and life. I love your spin, modern and playful. That main tho... That salt baked branzino! Excellent! I learned that years ago from Chef Pasternack at Esca! He used to serve it table side in a wood shipping crate, and clean it in front of the guests! Wonderful episode Stephen. Merry Christmas sir!
  • @LanPham-tc7ch
You’re absolutely right about NOT using cooking pans/skillets with round handles since they slip around.
  • @joshaltenburg
HOLY SANTA CLAUS. Dude. This is absolutely the most amazing Italian-American cullinary wonder I have ever experienced the Christmas Joy of watching. Go off. Yeah, this is my goal to make one year. Thank you for the step by step. Rock on.
