Eastman Small Body Tonality Comparison

Published 2023-02-24
As requested by John Collier - A comparison of my 2019 E20-P (size "0") with Martin X28 style trim, and my E40-00, a more lightly built a Martin style X42 trim "00". bought in 2020.
Both had new EJ16 strings fitted the day before.
Both were set up before shipping to me (nothing radical) and have needed no further work since.
No modifications apart from nicer bone bridge pins and "Holter" pick guards. I have allowed them exposure to sunlight through double glazed windows to gain a light "tan"
Both are made with adirondack tops, and rosewood backs and sides.
Both have 1 & 13/16" nut widths, 2 & 5/16" string spacing, and 24.9" scales.
NOTE: I am not sponsored by Eastman (but maybe I should be!)

  • They are both great guitars. I do like the E40-00 best. It sounds a little warmer, fuller and richer ... but not by much. Thanks for the demo.
  • @SiggyMe
I had noticed that you talked about the guitars in the other vid and didn't do much of tone test. This is really good of you to come back and demo them. Many of us can't get our hands on them so this helps me to wrap my mind around these guitars. The other thing I'm hoping for you to demo the boxy sounding verses the non-boxy guitar pointing out the sound differences. Then maybe which kind of guitar and woods are likely to produce that sound. I enjoy your videos. Thanks!
  • There is a noticeable difference, subtle, yet noticeable when played back in back. Both sound exquisite. I hope you are enjoying your life and will for decades to come!
  • I didn’t know Eastman made a beautiful Pearl/Ab parlor. That E40-00 is sweet. They both are great sounding 👍. I like that E-40 a lot. Eastman parlor’s are the bargain of the century! Thanks for sharing
  • @russheath15
Great playing as always and interesting video many thanks.

Reminds me of something I heard in my wretched youth - “I wouldn’t kick either of them out of bed!”
  • What a good video and topic this is Andy. I visited Reidys music store yesterday. I wanted to go and play the USA made Epiphone Texan and a few Gibson’s. All I can say is that it gave me a whole new appreciation for how well built my Twelve fret Brook Taw is, particularly re the fretboard. Not only that but the main difference is how the notes just seem to pop off my brook up the neck and there’s no lack of volume. Sure the dreadnoughts I played had a louder bass but the treble strings didn’t come close to my OOO. Had I played a Collings dreadnought then I’m sure things would of been different but to say I expected more from a £2600 Epiphone/Gibson would be an understatement. I really want to try an Eastman Dreadnought now.

What lovely instruments! To my 74 yo ears the 42-style sounds more…authoritative; the 28-style sounds restrained, almost shy. Thanks Andy! David

Andy, great comparison. I like the voice of the E40-00. According to Acoustic Shoppe in Missouri, E-40-00 are being produced in fewer numbers. I acquired an Eastman E40 OM TC with a Tone Tight neck (one of the Bourgeois Touchstone designed bolt on necks). Quite the guitar and a noticeable, fuller voice for an OM. I liked your dreadnought comparison, also. Best sounding & playing dreadnought I've played is a Martin Custom Shop D-28 12-fret short scale with VTS Adirondack top, 1 11/16" nut, modified low oval neck profile .

My E40-00 is in California today! I will have it tomorrow. I can't wait... Eastman is putting a similar pick guard on this batch. Same shape only darker.
  • Beautiful finger picking arrangement that sounded fantastic. I can tell even from the video that both these guitars have nice fretboards?
  • @deblane401
They both sound wonderful, but I think the E40 is a little brighter. Great demonstration. George in Montana

Hi, interesting video. I have a E10 00, so with mahogany back and side. I think that mine seats in between yours two speaking about the sound…. I suppose is due to the dryness of mahogany compared to rosewood. I removed the pick guard completely on mine, I play only finger style and I like it more without. I used to dream about a Martin 00-28 vr before having my Eastman…. now not anymore…. I am so happy with it!

Imo the biggest misconception about small body guitars like 00 and 000 is that they have a small sound, not true. I have the Grestch 12 fret cloudburst (discontinued) and although not in the class of the Eastman's, it is a surprisingly great sounding guitar. I have a '47 j45 and '97 hd28 for comparison. Love your videos and playing 🤩

Hello Andy, I hope this message finds you doing well. I too have cancer but am doing well. I am from "across the pond" in North Carolina. I love your channel, your love of guitars, and appreciate the time and effort you take to teach us "newbie" beginner guitar students. I just bought a 00 guitar(from a private seller) The strings are old and dead and I wanted to put new ones on. I was wondering what gauge stings you use or recommend. Thanks, for your time. • Hi Andy! I have a lovely little dilemma and i think perhaps you could advice me best. I purchased an Eastman E20 OO last year and was and still am in love with both the playing comfort and tone. I find that it takes to flatpicking very well, with a very robust, deep and focused tone. It seems almost immune to being overplayed. I enjoy fingerpicking on it too, but sometimes find myself having to really dig in (with nails) to get it to sing… its not (yet) the most resonant i guess. It might still open up some of course. now i stumbled upon an used Collings 000-2H that is available a couple of hours drive from my hometown. I know you own one and also an E40 OO and E20P and i think the E20P sounds close to my E20 OO. I have not played the Collings as it is a drive away. If i were to spring for the Collings (which i think can be had for a good price) i would have to sell the Eastman as well as a lot of other gear. Which would make me sad since do adore much about the E20. Do you think the 000-2h would mend my hurt and give me the resonance i long for? I know you can’t possibly answer that question. but advice is welcomed! enjoy your channel and tempo very much. Cheers

Great Video think I might get the 00. I think it would be a good companion with my Blueridge BR280.
  • @jeremyp2295
They both are wonderful sounding guitars that beg to be played. Is the binding on the oo that makes it seem like it has a narrower nut and string spacing? I think I prefer the feel of an unbound fret board.
  • @kevinhill1848
Great video, thanks for posting. I can't financially stretch to either of these models but am looking at the E2-OM Cedar Top, any thoughts on this model? Take care 👍

I've just fitted some Crosby bone bridge pins to my E20OO, and what a difference! The only slight problem I had was the B and top E holes in the bridge are considerably narrower, so after consulting YouTube I shaved both the appropriate pins down to fit, and it's fine now. I wonder if you have had the same problem? I've restrung it using the original pins and always lay them out in order, so don't know if they would have the same problem if you interchanged them? I used the existing strings to compare and it sounds so much fuller and brighter.
