Kingdom Hearts Series Retrospective: Comparing The Big 3 || ThinkBox Chris

Published 2022-03-02
The numbered titles of the Kingdom Hearts series are a cut above the rest when it comes to how they are perceived and lauded as the best things in the world of gaming. Are they perfect, no, but they certainty are great; and that's what I want to dive into today, giving my thoughts on the 3 numbered instalments of the series and explaining how they flow together and what strengths and weaknesses they have on their own in a bubble, and when looked at in context of the series as a whole and each other.

  • Have you ever noticed how Sora has a bit of a subtle arc in KH2 in relation to the nobodies? He goes from thinking they’re just heartless monsters to actually taking pity on the head nobody Xemnas at the end of the game.

Wow this video is genuinely amazing and while i disagree with some of your opinions regarding KH 3 and KH 2 the effort put into this video and the KH 3 legacy video is incredible. You DEFINITELY deserve more than 340 views on this

Okay so in your drive form mini section you give “Quick Run” to them as a drive form ability considering that seems like a throw away one to you, however this is only through a 2FM lense, remember limit form wasn’t in vanilla kh2 which means neither was dodge roll, so if you wanted a movement option that could get you out of the way from attacks Quickly (pun intended) Quick run was your best bet, so wisdom form locking quick run was basically OG kh2’s way of locking dodge roll behind a drive form. Glad I played kh2FM as I can’t imagine not being able to use dodge roll ever in a kh game

Love the alliterative titles you gave to each of the sections! This was a lotta fun to listen through. While I may have some differing opinions (cut to me at my computer, yelling to no one about how effective and well-integrated KH2's music was compared to 1 and 3!), I definitely loved hearing that you gave some real focus to thinking about the music of these games. Excited to give your previous & future essays a watch!

“I should be able to go up against the final boss with all my drive gauges up at 9” the sad thing is the max drive forms you can fight final Xemnas is the same in vainilla kh2 and final mix, 7. While yes they added a drive gauge for beating Absent silhouette Marluxia, that’ll still only get you to 7 because for some unknown reason (no pun intended) in final mix they changed the final storyline drive upgrade from beating Siax to beating final Xemnas, just thought I’d bring that up

I think the numbered games have been getting better with each one released, which means that I’m really looking forward to what 4 has in store

Well good!! I am sick of funkin and speed runs lol

So we talk about KH2 Organization 13 again. My problem with them isn’t the fact that don’t advance the plot, it’s that they’re barely in KH2 to begin with. They only appear in 7 worlds, if we’re being generous, out of 15 and that’s just odd. Axel also serves to be something interesting in this discussion as well because you could say that he’s goal is to get Roxas back not complete the fake Kingdom Hearts, so he could serve an awesome antagonist role in the first part then the second part is where we redeem him but the Organization is hunting him down for his betrayal.

1st. Also I love traverse town. Especially in DDD
  • By the way, very apt comparison about how 3 is kinda like the put upon youngest child that everyone expects to follow the example set
  • I think Regular Pat also said something similar about KH1’s progression system. It really makes you feel like an underdog compared to how powerful you are in other games.
  • So I’ve been doing a lvl 1 playthrough of KH1 in celebration of the 20th anniversary, and when I finally found Riku in Traverse Town, something actually occurred to me that I never gave much thought to before. Does Riku turn against Sora for reasons that are kinda flimsy? He seems to immediately believe Maleficent’s word that Sora has replaced him as his best friend. And what makes it worse is that 5 minutes ago Riku saw for himself Sora begging Donald to let him come with them.
  • Is it a hot take to say that Sora in KH1 is a little bland compared to how he is in later games? He’s a bit more subdued and doesn’t talk as much. I understand why he’s that way though. Most protagonists in their first outings usually need to take a bit of time to develop and to get use to the new world they suddenly find themselves in.

People say that KH1 had the best explanation and that KH2 had the best combat. I’m really glad Square went out of it’s way to give us the best of both worlds in 3.
