In this video Terry Erasmus discusses the basic tools required for repotting and their uses. He then demonstrates repotting technique using a refined Chinese elm from his personal collection; including how to free a root ball from a pot, how to rake the roots out and trim them, how to secure the tree in the container and apply top dressing.

Thank you for this wonderful repotting vid Terry. Love your method for securing the tree using chop stick pegs into the rootball - will have to remember this tip. The tree and pot comb fit together just beautifully - like they were made for each other!

Great seeing this Elm again, can't believe it's been two years already! Nice tip on using the sieve to grate the moss will definitely use that one. Would love to see a few of the other techniques to tying trees down, especially some of the younger pre bonsai that don't have as solid a root base and the round pots that have 3 holes (although I have the feeling you may have done that before :) brilliant video as always.
  • what a lovely tree this is...and such a healthy root bowl....m left in so much AWE!!

I liked the use of chop sticks to secure the tree in the pot. I will start using this technique. I too reduce the root ball when I am repotting on a hot day.. over all a very good video.
