Finding SHELLS when there are no shell piles - Caladesi Island, Florida

Published 2022-05-05
Hi Everyone!

We are making a trip to beautiful Caladesi Island, State Park in Florida.

Everybody loves when the ocean washes piles of shells onto the beach, but let's be honest, that doesn't happen as often as we would all like!

I want to take this time to show you how you can read the beach, and where you can find shells when there aren't piles and heaps of shells... it's absolutely still possible!

Let's GO!

Beautiful scenery.Best places to visit in Florida. Only to name a few.
  • I went here once with a friend in the winter. It was only us 2 the entire time! Wore 3 pairs of pants and 5 tops 🤣 We found our first star fish there 🤗 our bags were loaded with shells and beach stuff! I collected 12 pairs of sunglasses on the beach that day!
  • Love the big Bay Scallop and the Purplish Semele. Beautiful day for a long walk on a beautiful beach!

When I need to a break from the daily struggle of nursing school I find solace coming here and watching you videos so tranquil and relaxing. Beautiful imagery. Your videos inspire me to stop at a east coast beach when I take my grad trip in October to Florida but I dont want to be disappointed but I would like to see if I can find different shells than the ones found on the West Coast. SWF beach life and Solace in Shelling are favorite escapes. Thank you for what you do!

I appreciate how much time you take to set up your different cameras to get those super cool shots of you walking the beach :) Nice island visit. That worn down star shell was pretty cool! I've seen the live calico scallops in really shallow water with all their little eyes - really cool stuff. Once again nice video! Keep 'em coming!
  • Thank you! Enjoyed your beach walk & treasures ❤️ I read a great book about a woman who grew up on the island and used to take a row boat to the mainland to go to school everyday! Amazing history.

Wow, a great place for shelling. I've never been there, hopefully soon. Thanks 👍
  • Well that drive over the Dunedin causeway looked familiar! I take it about 3 times a week!😂 Taking the ferry over from Honeymoon is a fun thing to do. It's a beautiful island. But I don't think the shelling is as good as it used to be. The north end used to always have shells but they don't wash up as much now. Sea floor must have changed... The first big white shell you found I think is an Atlantic fat tellin. That's a hard one to ID cuz it sort of looks like a smooth duck clam. And I think the pinkish shell at 5:25 is a worn cross-hatch Venus clam. Semeles are more round... Pretty pear whelk at 6 min. And there are really lots of long-spined star shells in that area. I see them all the time at Honeymoon. Glad you said to look at the high tide wrack line. Most people don't. I've found some great stuff there. You found a pretty good variety that day! Calico scallops are not that common here either. The live one was cool. You really had a nice quiet day there. Thanks for filming in "my neighborhood"!
