Jesus is Real: Calyann's Experience with the Book of Mormon

Published 2021-03-11
Friends, fun, parties, and professional success—Calyann Barnett had it all! That was until Calyann discovered she lived in a prison of her own making. Through her willingness to put God’s promises to the test, she realized there was something in life she hadn’t yet experienced—the peace of knowing that Jesus Christ’s love is real and available to all. Everyone can find this peace if they’re willing to take the time to learn of Christ and listen to His words.

  • I’m a Christian but after listening to your story I definitely want to read the Book of Mormon. Your story was completely divine.
  • This is a powerful testimony. Being a black man and member of the church living in Utah, I am engaged with other members that have their testimonies challenged by racism of other members and actions by the church prior to the Priesthood being "allowed" to be held by black men. Many times we have to only ask of God for direction and answers to our questions in order to re-affirm our testimony. Most of my friends are non-members from Philly and ask why I remain with the church. I cannot deny my testimony that God lives and I know the church is true. I hang out with my non-member friends all the time and they respect my choices and we have a lot of fun. I hope to hear more conversion stories from more black members from inside America especially (no offense to my international brothers and sisters) because of the unique challenges. Thank you Calyann for sharing this testimony and I hope I can talk to you soon to hear more of your life's stories.

Being Hispanic and likely a descendant of those cursed with a "skin of blackness" I've sincerely prayed about those scriptures. And while I was eventually given to understand that these words may mean something very different than we had ever considered...at the time I specifically received the answer of "I have written what I have written" and that it's not my place to question GOD but to be still and believe. I felt such peace after that! I don't know why these challenging phrases were included in the Book of Mormon. But I can testify that if you are willing to act in faith like Callie did and let the seed grow and take root you will experience glorious love and peace that passeth all understanding ♥

On my mission in Finland I met a lady who was hired to read the Book of Mormon to prove it wrong. She also felt the truthfulness it contains and joined the Church. The Book of Mormon is exactly what it claims to be: another testament of Jesus Christ. It contains the fulness of His Gospel and, goes hand in hand with the Bible.

If you can get past the barrier the world has stereo-typed towards religion - it's a much happier place. Kudos to Calyann for her perserverance...this was a great, modern day story that I needed today.

I am a member of the church of Jesus Christ of latter day saints, and I have had some of the same thoughts about the scriptures she had issues with in the beginning. When I realized that God was not saying black skin was the curse but merely just a sign of those who had removed themselves from his influence, and the curse was to be separated from his spirit, it made more sense to me. What a beautiful testimony and experience! Love this lady! Thankyou for sharing.

I am a Christian and an inactive member of the LDS Church, but I love your testimony and feel like I want to start reading the Book of Mormon again now. I might give it another chance, I think. There is so much about the LDS Church that I love...and miss....thanks for sharing your story. I love your hair, by the way! The colour really suits you! Wish I could get away with that, but I'm in my sixties....probably not a good look for me, lol!
  • I remember when I was exploring the Book of Mormon for the first time. I was looking at everything through the eyes of a skeptic, I could see how a non-believer would think about the things they were learning or reading. Then I had a moment where I thought, "What if I looked at everything through the eyes of a believer?" I was curious to see how the experience would change, and boy did it. I started to feel the Holy Ghost stir my heart to love, compassion, forgiveness. The Book of Mormon has power that helped me to overcome my worst weaknesses, things that I had tried previously to conquer with shear will power, and couldn't. I was amazed at how quickly Heavenly Father's power in the Book of Mormon changed my heart, my thoughts, desires, and actions. Wonderful testimony Caly. I had forgotten that I looked at everything from a skeptic's perspective too, and the Spirit guided me to that moment where I had a choice to rather learn as a potential believer instead.
  • What a powerful testimony of the Book of Mormon. I too was a skeptic turned believer after reading it. I joined the church and got baptized and my life has forever changed for the better because of it!

I love Clark. The guy who is cool, kind, and loving to people who do not believe as he does. Amazing story.
  • I love this SO MUCH!!!! Thank you for showing a non-typical Latter-Day Saint. Being a Latter-Day Saint in Utah is really rough. There seems to be this typical norm that you feel pressure to fit into. I love that her individuality and style shines through and adds to her faith and light.

The Book of Mormon IS True, it was saved for us in these last days.... it is powerful. It is Another testament of our Savior Jesus Christ. Read it, study it, pray to our Heavenly Father yourself and ask Him if what you’re reading is true. Be “sincere” and He Will answer. Thank you Calyann for sharing your awesome testimony 😇

...makes me wonder, "am I the type of person that others feel they can and would want to ask about my faith?". 🤔 I could be better. Beautiful story...Alma's my homeboy too. But Ammon's probably my favorite.

I'm glad Calyann pushed through her doubts. I have some family who is LDS and some who are vehemently anti-Mormon. The family members who are anti-Mormon went through some of the same doubts and concerns that Calyann did, but instead of striving to "finish the book" as she did, they made up their minds. And they have had nothing but animosity toward the church since. I myself have spent half my life outside of the church. But despite what trials of faith I have, I have never gotten to far away. Because, regardless of what I believe, I know a few things. I know the LDS people I have met through out my life are good and decent people. I know they would help anyone. I know (at least the ones I know) are not judgemental and would be happy to see literally anyone come to church, no matter their pains, no matter their fears, no matter the holes in their hearts. I respect Calyann for putting in the work. Faith does not come overnight, and for some of us it does not come in a few years. But I think those who "endure" will find what they are looking for.

We love Calyann so much! What a powerhouse. "The Book of Mormon is for both member and nonmember. Combined with the Spirit of the Lord, the Book of Mormon is the greatest single tool which God has given us to convert the world." - Ezra Taft Benson

I never post but had to today. I'm humbled and so impacted by her witness. She's a beloved handmaiden of the Lord, called to minister. My soul has been healed by His Light today, through her light. May she be blessed abundantly for it.

I am here in Korea Jesus Christ lives, His Church is restored!
  • @DamonGarfield
I was once skeptical of Joseph Smith and his experience in the grove. But I had a very similar experience, it was terrifying, wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. But I know that what happened to Joseph is true!

D-wade is still my favorite NBA player. Still miss him in the league 🤭. This is another great example of being proactive in your search for truth. Seek and ye shall find! The B.O.M is true and through! Jesus is the Christ and talks to all his people all over the world. Imagine all the other records we haven't received yet from the other continents 🤯 #churchistrue
