I videotaped this from RTE's "No Disco" program in around 1997. Sad to think that both participants are no longer with us. Uaneen Fitzsimons died in a tragic accident in 2000, and Mark E. Smith died from cancer in 2018. The interview highlights Fitzsimons' tact as an interviewer and Smith's classic "grumpy" personality. I particularly liked his comments on "Dave Bowie"....

  • one of the best this in terms of giving you the headlines. heavily edited - love the David bowie bit
  • you had to give Mark 5 seconds after he's stopped talking just to ensure he didn't have his next sentence ready to fire
  • Dj's think their musicians and that's a problem.... Oh how I miss you Mark.
  • Anthony! I used to know Uaneen and a google search brought me here! Thanks for uploading ! How have you been!

I wonder why someone thought it was necessary to include the fall music in the background

Much as I love Dave Bowie I agree with MES. Lots of pale imitations particularly in the 80s
  • Uaneen Fitzsimons interviews Mark E. Smith 11.7.23 1537pm i would like to see the whole interview. i am only here due to my wishing to bone up on, discuss the alleged secret horror movie screenplay the former members of the fall need to make - allegedly they have published this screen play.. is it worth indulging with or is it the usual convoluted smarm pap we have come to expect...? i mean, stood at one's back door peering thru a crack in the door at the veg plot is all good and well... but it doesn't count as an alternative to enjoying someone chat about stuff they enjoy or are passionate about.

He lived in absolute fantasy land.

A good interviewer lets the interviewed speak in their personal natural rhythm, not try to fill the silence in a natural conversational pause immediately. You end up derailing every single answer that way. TV interviewers can be the worst in this regard. (not that this is SO bad, but it's definitely obvious here)
