Genesis 3:1 "Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made." The serpent was considered a beast of the field. No where in this story is Satan mentioned. People have added their own interpretation to fit their beliefs. To take this literal, you must believe that animals can talk, that satan or the adversary was chilling in paradise with Adam and the spare rib and that God knew what was going to happen and punished them for it instead of preventing it.
