I decided to rent a car for my trip to Guatemala, ignoring the internet comments advising against driving in the capital. I decided to find out first-hand how the driving experience is for a foreigner. Here is the result

Great video, made me smile and realize that I will never drive in Guatemala. Great for making plans though and to smile a while. Much appreciated.

I’m from Atlanta where originally I thought traffic was terrible but seeing your experience in Guatemala gave me so much anxiety. My parents are from Guatemala so this video gave me a better idea how life is there. I’m so alleviated that you made to home.
  • You are very brave! Driving in Guatemala is complicated and risky! Thanks for sharing your adventure!

Be careful man. Don't get too confident. Always be super cautious. Especially in South America and Mexico. Your Spanish skills have saved you many times.

@4:55 it was giving you the hint "turn right into 6a avenida pista izquierda", or "6th av left lane".. then on 22 st turn left towards 7th av, which goes straight to the palace. Driving here wasn't always like this. Before the traffic outgrew the capacity (many years ago) it was actually pretty easy to navigate the city. Now there's a bunch of quick "fixes" and new construction everywhere that make navigating very chaotic and stressful.

Actually the traffic wasn't that bad in this video compared to how it was when I was last there recently. Spent about 10 days last month and the traffic was awful. Stop and go almost everywhere. For some crazy reason they got rid of almost all the city buses and everyone was forced to rely on their own transportation. Now you have this mess.

Hey that's cool...I stay in the same place (Mixco) in February

Anwser, its no easy to drive in Guatemala City for me as a resident. Specially in that zone in where almost all the streets has that disign with “two tracks”. Its horrible when you arr looking for ona direction and you end up on the wrong side LOL.

I know your pain I live in ciudad Guatemala for 6 months and I had a pickup and motorcycle, driving was interesting to say the least

Hey! Where did you rent your car? We are going in December for 10 days. Thanks.
  • I have used both Waze and Google maps but find the verbal instructions Waze gives are very confusing. I did better with google maps though I was just giving the indications, not driving. Waze is suppose to tell you ahead of time when there is a speed bump. I have driven briefly but can see how you would be anxious, especially if it's the first time in the city and driving.
