The Scary Moment Khanyisa Gets a Fright at Seeing a Rhino & the Whole Elephant Herd Come Running

Published 2022-03-25
There is nothing quite like the force of a united elephant front when it comes to protecting their herd! Especially the youngest in the herd.

On a walk back to the homestead in the evening, Khanyisa spies a rhino close by and screams, ears out, tail up! She bolts in the opposite direction of the rhino and the herd who are all following her home run after her to surround and protect the calf. This instinct also protects the whole herd as they gather together and offer more potency to their shield against any threat.

Bulls like Sebakwe and Mambo, but even bold cows like Bubi, will roam about on the outskirts to show their displeasure to outsiders and try to scare off the threat. Here Mambo does just that and flaps his heads about, causing his ears to make a thunderous clap that is also used to scare off whatever is causing the elephants alarm.

Our carers try to calm the herd down and continue onwards passed the rhino to the homestead. Because Khanyisa got such a fright and reacted with a scream, it alarmed the herd more than they would regularly be in the presence of a rhino โ€” even one so close to their homestead.

Fishan moves speedily across the plains to get home - he is walking so well in this warm weather - but Bubi makes sure he is safe by waiting for him. Bubi and Lundi both display their concern with head shakes and turning around while the herd are on the move but Jabulani and Tokwe kindly check in on the humans, coming in close to Adine and the carers to make sure all is well and no one is left behind.

Adine manages to film the rhino in the area before heading to the orphanage to check on Khanyisa. The calf is surrounded by her favourite things: Lammie and Nungu, Stavros and sweet potatoes, as well as fresh marula fruit treats. Lammie takes over lookout duty before Willinton arrives for night duty!

  • It was amazing how they all ran to protect Khanyisa & to check on Adine & the carers. They are BEAUTIFUL.๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

You know you've done an exceptional job with these sweet, beautiful souls when they come back to make sure their human family is also alright. It was frightening to watch, and more heart-jolting than a horror movie! Especially when we "know" and care about the family!

I love how the entire herd moves quickly into action to keep baby safeโค๏ธ๐Ÿ˜
  • The poor Rhino was probably more startled than anyone, wondering whatever he or she had done wrong to upset all the huge elephants! I imagine that the herd's leadership realized quickly that everything was actually just fine but it was an opportunity to give the younger elephants, like Mambo, a chance to be guardians and also to feel protected. A great video!
  • I will never get over just how amazing the matriarch, Tokwe is. She has such love for both her human and elephant herds. When she came over to check on Adine, she was looking down at the camera, and her eyes were so soulful! This, and the video of her crashing through the bush when she was running to get back to the homestead in the dark, makes me love her even more! She is FIERCE!

The herd never ceases to amaze. How quickly they surrounded Princess Pinkness and they even checked on the care takers.
  • The herd acts as a cohesive group, all running to protect baby Khanyisa. That in itself is a miracle. These elephants are mostly unrelated but have come together because of similar circumstances. So, to see them caring so deeply about each other is very touching and tribute to all the hard work of the carers. Bless all of you, human and elephant!๐Ÿค—๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ’–
  • Itโ€™s so wonderful to see them run to protect Khanyisa and each other. And so sweet when they checked on the humans.โค๏ธ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿค—

Makes cry to see how protective they are over the baby and each other. If only all people were like that towards family and everyone. Humans can learn a lot from animals. โ™ฅ๏ธ๐Ÿ˜โ™ฅ๏ธ๐Ÿ˜

Sorry baby Khanyisa got scared but I love watching these examples of over and above protectiveness by all the elephants! What a herd they are indeed!

Sometimes it can be a scary world out there for a baby elephant, until she cries out and her amazing family comes running to help her. Beautiful footage of elephant love, even making sure the humans are safe is so sweet. โค๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ™„

Oh wow ! I felt that herd reaction ! the emotion was raw and powerful. What amazing instincts they have and the bonds are so strong. I am in awe .
  • Seeing the whole HERD running to Khaynisa was amazing. What a special bond they all have not only with each other but also with their human family. They all went into protection mode. What an amazing group of elephants. I have said it before, you don't have to be blood to be a family. I was so happy to see them all settled down and back at the homestead. Khaynisa sure does love Marula fruit. Night night Khaynisa, sleep well. Thank you for this great video.โค๏ธ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜โค๏ธ

They love their little pink baby so much, itโ€™s amazing how much they fiercely protect her, immediately, yet Jab comes to check in his human babies too. Much love Adine and carers xx
  • Khanysia natural instinct kicked in which is a good sign. Good to see all rally around for support and protection

Wow! Our girl sure didnโ€™t like that rhino in โ€˜herโ€™ property and when she screams & runs to the other side, a massive moving โ€˜wallโ€™ runs to protect her & each other. โ€˜Captainโ€™ Mambo is there to protect them all trunk up, ears flapping like thunder! Meanwhileโ€ฆ. the lone rhino was close to have a heart attack.๐Ÿ˜ Nothing like coming home to yummy stuff & relaxing for the night.๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ˜
  • I think I would be just a little startled if I found a rhino in front of me too :) It never ceases to be a wonderously powerful sight to see the way the herd rallies to a distressed member :) It was quite sweet when Jabulani and Tokwe came back to check on the 2-legged herd members too :) Hello to all at HERD and thank you for the care you give the herd <3
  • This video was pure adrenaline, right off the bat. Baby elephant screams and runs, like my toddler did when she was frightened ๐Ÿ˜‚. The low rumbles with trumpeting coming from the herd๐Ÿ˜ณ Wow. Tail straight out, followed by head swings, causing ear flaps, mean business!! This video has my favorites ๐Ÿ’•elephant & rhino ๐Ÿ’•. โ€”Seattle Family ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Wow..that was an experience I bet. I was shocked to see just how fast some of the elephants moved. One of them was full on sprinting with a goal to protect! โค
