An east London primary school has closed early for the Christmas holidays over "escalating threats against staff" after allegations an eight-year-old boy was punished by teachers for refusing to remove a Palestinian flag from his coat.

In a letter to parents, Barclay Primary School, in Leyton, said there was "no evidence to support any allegations of bullying or misconduct" after the claims were made on TikTok.

Protesters gathered outside the school, which is rated outstanding by Ofsted, on Thursday chanting "Barclay, Barclay, shame on you," and "teachers and families must unite, education is a human right".

Why don’t the teachers put on the same energy when it comes to bullying?
  • @Strangerspath
This is a case of selective amnesia. It wasn't long ago when there was a particular blue and yellow flag on top of this school.

Headteacher must go , nothing wrong with supporting your own country

As a former Barclay Primary School pupil now at Leytonstone School, I can see why my Year 7 friends are talking about this incident.

He was wearing an flag of his culture, so what was so wrong about that. If they can have Ukrainian flag which I’m sure none of them were even related to, why can’t he.

Hypocrisy from the school, I remember when everyone was encouraged to support Ukraine and flags and Ukraine colours were encouraged. This is the problem when merely supporting Palestine has become an issue, the amount of influence Israel has in the UK is frightening.

Wow the double standards are SICKENING 🤮 The head of that school should be truly shamed of themselves, absolutely shocking

I can see hypocrisy on this issue .If there is a rule ,it must be fairly and consistently applied.

The school head is acting like an Israeli prison guard. The fact that Ukranian flags are actively encouraged, but Gaza flags are banned says it all about the head teachers disgusting appartheid rules. Head teacher needs to go.

If they can raise Ukrainian flag when the they have no connection with ukraine then surely he has more right to raise the Palestinian flag as he has connection to it

Double Standards. Didnt have this amount of drama when they were showing solidarity with Ukraine

I'm so glad that the community came together for Yahya. Utterly heart-broken for the young boy. Double standards at its finest. All out support for Ukraine but non for Palestine from majority of schools across the UK. They are suddenly "apolitical" .

Yes close early for Christmas so they have plenty of time to reflect on the Christmas spirit of giving, of compassion and humanity
