Growing Up In Eugene Oregon I Childhood Memory Lane

Published 2021-12-25
Molly and I haven't seen each other in roughly 40 years. It was awesome to become reconnected. We grew up in Eugene, Oregon, and have some fond memories of Eugene. On Black Friday 2021, we drove down to Eugene from Portland, and took a trip down Childhood Memory Lane. I left a lot of chats and sight seeing out...there's so much!! When ones goes back...you go back knowing the joy and the pain will appear. I think we both embraced that with open hearts. Childhood's can be like dreams, surreal, happy and scary. I really hope I captured what I was feeling in the moment.

We attended Condon Elementary directly across from Hayward Field. The school was built in 1924, and now belongs to the University of Oregon. I believe it's a English school now for foreign college students. Hayward Field was our playground. It was small, and we kind of did what we wanted. Today it is totally unrecognizable. Looks like a spaceship landed on top of it. I suppose it looks so crazy due to the Olympic tryouts? Either way, no more sneaking under the bleachers to jump on the trampoline! Growing up near the U of O campus was a huge plus. It was one of my backyards...riding my bike throughout the campus, constantly wandering into the art museum, and never being bothered by adults. So many places to explore.

We had a great day in Eugene...I'd love to go back for another day of memories.

  • Hello Molly and Sherry! Loved the video! My sister and I went back a couple years back and did the same thing driving around that same neighborhood. We used be friends too. Love you guys for ever! ❤️

I grew up in Eugene around that time too, but north, Sheldon High area. Remember seeing Pre's last race, it was on a Thursday and showing up at school (Cal Young) the next day to find out from friends that he died. It didn't seem real. My Dad was a UO grad, Ed major and did his student teaching at Condon and at Roosevelt Jr High. Sad as well to see Hayward Field torn down. Used to run in the all-comers meets there in addition to seeing countless track meets. When they ultimately tear down McArthur court that will be a sad day. Great memories though of my hometown in the 60's and 70's.
  • This is funny how I found you. I was looking at another travel channel and clicking on the names who had made comments to see what their channels are like. I read what you wrote about your channel and liked your description. I feel the same in that I am more about the feeling of a place then what I ate. Then I was glancing at your videos - Eugene? I haven't lived there since 1996. I graduated from high school there in 1983 and from the U of O in 1989. I lived at the base of Hendricks Park for two years and I have a picture of Pre on my wall.
