Our sense of smell has the deepest tie to emotion and memory. But it’s also the most overlooked. In business, that’s a giant missed opportunity.

Dawn Goldworm knows how to use scent to evoke emotion and create loyalty. From Lady Gaga to Ferrari to books, Dawn designs signature fragrances that allow humans to connect with brands in a more meaningful way. A perfumer turned entrepreneur, her company 12.29 works with some of the biggest names in hospitality, fashion, automotive, and beyond.

Many years ago, Dawn helped me create the Scent of Optimism. I was excited to talk with her about what it takes to compose a new smell from scratch and why smell has the unique ability to make a brand instantly memorable.

This…is A Bit of Optimism.

Thanks, Simon - Currently on my 4th Dr Gabor Mate' book. I am totally into neuroscience, its all amazing to me. I am very interested in reading "Together is Better" - Appreciate all you do - I stumbled onto you video's after I was let go from a job in Mar 2023. You helped me to see that being let go was the best thing that could've happened. The leaders of the company lacked the basic human skills. Thanks, again. Janelle
  • This was a fascinating podcast. Given the topic, I was surprised that you (Simon) didn't ask your two signature questions: one favorite project... and a specific childhood memory that you can relive with them. I enjoy when you tie their answers together with a common underlying theme.
  • Thank you! Absolutely amazing conversations👍 One of my favorite scents is a scent of my skin. Our scent is a complex product influenced by many factors, including our genetics. Researchers believe that a particular group of genes, the major histocompatibility complex, play a large role in scent production. These genes are involved in the body’s immune response and are believed to influence body odor by encoding the production of specific proteins and chemicals.

This episode is so amazing. My wife lit an incense stick here in my work area. Then i listen to this podcast then i sniffed my shirt, i smelled smoke and then the color gray popped on my mind and then i realized that my wife lit an incense earlier. 😅
  • CO2 breakdown of adhesives in shoes.. same as new carpet smell & New car smell! (Loved this conversation, making lunches for my kids and learning @ the same time! TY)

I don’t want to generalize but am sharing my experience as a foreigner in the land of UAE. From Abu Dhabi to the center of Dubai all the women I came into close proximity with smelled like roses. The scent of the rose smell was overpowering that you could smell from 6 feet apart. They all had the same scent as a tourist I could have distinguished the smells if it was any different. The rose scent has a strong connotation to their religious belief I learned that while I was there.
  • Hmm, interesting the scent of vanilla is universally most liked. However, when I smell "vanilla" candles, perfume, room deodorizer, etc I get an instant headache. I like the taste of vanilla foods and vanilla extract but there's something about artificial (?) vanilla that I can't handle. And perfumes in general usually give me a headache. I avoid the perfume section of department stores.
  • Good convo. Confused why she kept saying “Viotale” molecule. Simon even asked what that is. I believe she means Volatile. Like Volatile Organic Compounds VOC…

Well, the only scent that I can't stand is vanilla 🤮🤷‍♀️
