Elon Musk was dissatisfied with regular school and started one, called Ad Astra (which means "To the Stars" in Latin) to educate his 5 children and also 9 children of SpaceX employees.

"The CEO wanted his school to teach according to students' individual aptitudes, so he did away with the grade structure entirely."

Musk was asked in a Chinese TV Interview about his fatherhood and opened about his new school, in existence since only one year.

The Video was probably recorded on April, 24th 2015

The Washington Post collected an insightful and sad Musk quote:
“They got my best [expletive] friend to lure me out of hiding so they could beat me up. And that [expletive] hurt. For some reason they decided that I was it, and they were going to go after me nonstop. That’s what made growing up difficult. For a number of years there was no respite. You get chased around by gangs at school who tried to beat the [expletive] out of me, and then I’d come home, and it would just be awful there as well.” — Elon Musk, who said he was hospitalized after one beating and couldn’t return to school for a week. He was living with his father, who was said to delight in being hard on his sons.

Elon Musk Mentality: "I don't like our schools, I'll make my own." "I don't like our cars, I'll make my own." "I don't like our rockets, I'll make my own." "I don't like our highways, I'll make my own." "I don't like our energy companies, I'll make my own." "I don't like our planet, I'll go to another one."

    2:21 - "I hated school when I was a kid. It's torture." Can't agree more on that...

What a wonderful spirit he is. How I wish we all could have gone to his school.

Everything Elon touches turns into gold. I wouldn't be surprised if this school style explodes in popularity.
  • Elon Musk is able to say the obvious truth that no one else will say with courage and conviction.  We need more leaders like him.  He is not afraid to challenge the status quo and go with his instincts, yet balances this out with practicality and perseverance. Thank you Elon, the world is better for it. You are loved!
  • I know that Elon already has 5 kids, but please reproduce even more kind sir. We need more of your gene pool in our world.

When he says he created a little school and the interviewer laughs, he looks at her like "tf is funny? I really did, bitch." 😂

Elon Musk is so rich that he doesn’t want his Kids to go to go to school with other rich kids

damn, he's the only billionaire that points out the problem of education system. and he didn't want his children suffer in the current system so he built his own to nurture the skills and intelligence not only his child but also who will enroll in that school. Such a brilliant man.

Elon musk is the type of guy to build his own road because he doesn’t like traffic

"Teach to the problems, not to the tools." Aha, that's what I had missed when I was little.

We humans learn by "failing" very much like other animals, the greatest discoveries in this century were achieved by people that "failed" at school yet we have an education system that punishes "failing" the irony is they are the ones that fail to see that "failing" = learning

I can't stand the idea of my kids going to school and learning all the bad words and behaviors of school kids, or get bullied and get their self esteem damaged forever. I want my kids to be homeschooled. The other reason is of course what Musk said, I want their education to be more tailored for their interests so their talents can flourish.

I really hope he eventually starts creating schools like this on a wider scale. Hes one of the few people who has the guts to go and create everything that he imagines. Of course he has countless engineers behind him, but you need a strong leader with a strong vision to get them an to cooperate.
