its no secret that splatoon 3's ability chunk system is not very good. its the only aspect in the entirety of splatoon that has a grind aspect to it, so lets fix it. im going to go over a massive twitter argument, my perspective on modding in chunks, and how i would fix them. enjoy!

I've been mass grinding salmon run for a month since I changed a main on my gear to swim speed, and I have only gotten 17 swim speed chunks so far
  • My idea is probably not in any way likely to be implemented by Nintendo, but I would say that abilities on gear should be unlockable and swappable. So, once I get a sub of run speed up, I can now swap out whatever sub is in a slot on that piece of gear with a run speed up sub at any time at no cost. If you really like a certain hat or something, but have a build you use for hydra and a different build for ranged blaster, now you can quickly and freely switch out the subs and mains of that hat to whatever build you want at the time. This solution allows players to experiment with different builds and play styles without wasting hundreds of hours just to make a single set as well as have a sense of progress where they can keep unlocking new stuff for the gear they like. Abilities on gear aren’t vertical progression anyways, it’s all horizontal “progression” that just lets you change your play style. There’s no reason to make horizontal movements extremely time and resource consuming. That would be like saying that to switch the weapon you are using, you would need to buy the “new” weapon and spend a Sheldon license every time. Obviously that’s stupid. You bought and unlocked the weapon already, there’s no reason you should have to pay for it again if you just want to switch something out and try something different

Personally unless it's something like main power up I feel like hacking in chunks is perfectly fine because main power up for most weapons was literal damage up
  • Allow the player to swap drink tickets for chunks as well. I have 87 Ink Resistance Tickets. I physically cannot play 1740 matches to get rid of those before I acquire more

I feel like they won't chance the current system, as horrid as it is for casual players without 12 hours to spend on Splatoon a day, because they'd be too lazy to retroactively implement level up rewards for players. That's it, that's the reason I don't think they'll change it, and the fact I've found myself with such little faith personally in the dev team of my favorite Nintendo franchise is astonishing. I love splatoon, but holy heck their dev team seemingly despises balanced gameplay.

Smh Imagine not getting every time in the shellout machine 10 of all chunks

I think this is like how Pokémon is. It’s dumb to have to grind that much, but hacking gives an unfair advantage to people who don’t want to or can’t mod their switch

It is so sweaty I wish they made it so you could win a random chunk each win of turf war or anarchy singles and if you do anarchy series and win all five matches you get 10 chunks this way it should be easier to get chunks also wish they had caps like each main is the cap for the ability and the sub abilities are like 5 points each while a main is 15 and 15 is max this way sets are less how much speed do you wanna use on your roller which gets rid of their weaknesses cause a heavy is supposed to be heavy and not all abilities are equal which means heavy weapons benefit from some of the better chunks more which makes a bit of a power curve the only reason heavy’s aren’t dominant is because they are usually bad weapons like rollers and splatlings which on average are weaker cause of the speed but it’s what balances them

in my experience, no, i do not level up relatively often. maybe like once a day if i'm lucky.

lmao salmon run isnt really an option for me because the l button (the button that lets you throw eggs) on my joycon controller is broken, and the right-analog-stick-button (im really not sure what its called, its the special button) on my pro controller is also broken, so if i want to grind for chunks i have to choose between either being able to throw eggs or being able to trigger specials
  • How about a little math to get an idea on how many chunks are needed for things It takes 45 chunks to change a main and 10 chunks to change a sub If you want a pure, it takes 45 for the main and 30 for the subs, so 75 chunks total To make 3 pure pieces of gear, it takes 225 chunks for 3 the pure. If you don’t care about cosmetics, you will have the mains already what you want. So it will take 90 chunks max for the subs you want, not including any that you gain along the way, which isn’t that bad Now if you want your gear to look good and be functional, I’m sorry, but it’s 225 -45 if the main is already good and -10 for each sub that is good. However if you only care about functionality, then 90 isn’t bad and enough salmon run grinding or grinding in turf or anarchy (remember to scrub gear) with the respective drying for the chunk your looking for. This however is really for only 1 gear set if you want to main a single weapon. If you want subs on specific pieces or if you want multiple sets for different scenarios, then you will obviously need more chunks (180 tops for 2 sets, if you don’t care about looks). For the record, grinding to at least 1200 points in salmon run isn’t bad anyways and is recommended if you ask me. This gives you many things, including money, tickets, and gear. After 1200 for general things, it’s 200 for gear, and eventually 400 for gear. Also the first shell out machine play each day is 5,000 so do use it, maybe you get lucky But personally, I think the people hacking the ability chunks are looking for gear that looks good to also be functional, but don’t want to spend the 225 total chunks needed. Just stick with functional gear until you get the chunks for you good looking gear to also be functional if you ask me

Honestly salmon run is the most fun mode in the game, I have more chunks than I know what to do with
  • @elitobin
Honestly I don't think it's that hard to get the gear you want... if you have sea snails and the fact that splatfests don't happen every month anymore is really annoying
