Couple Saves 50% on Rent by Moving to a Different City - Full Apartment Tour

Published 2024-07-20
My & Phu are giving us a full tour of their beautiful 1-bedroom apartment in Montreal. The apartment is 600 square feet, which gives them space to have two home offices in the living room since they both work from home. They are comfortable minimalists which means they aren't sacrificing on comfort, but they are trying to keep things simple and not own too much stuff. They moved to Montreal last year because rent for this newly renovated apartment was nearly half of what they were paying in Toronto for a smaller apartment.

Not everyone can relocate so easily, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution to the rising cost of housing. Moving is just one idea that could help some folks cope with the rising cost of housing where they live. Some questions we can all ask ourselves: is it possible to move to a smaller space, to a cheaper neighbourhood, or even to a cheaper city to find more affordable housing?

Keep in mind that it's not always the cost of housing alone that should be considered. Transportation can be a huge factor as well! For example, if you move to a cheaper neighbourhood but then you need a car, then you might not be saving as much as you initially thought!

Thanks for watching!

  • They created a beautiful space for themselves. The fact that it’s half the price they paid for their previous apartment is definitely a good thing. ❤❤

Very smart decisions, they have everything they need and nothing they don’t. Good job!

Never seen minimalism so well understood and also feels like someone else can make an endeavour like this to do. ❤

I do wonder by what kind of wizardry I knew at first glance, before she started talking, that they were in Montréal. Maybe the specific look of the old windows and the heating metal thing on the wall? The feel of the apartment? A burst of nostalgia and "homey feeling"? It's unreal how I just knew. I never even lived in Montréal, just visited lots of friends and family over the years. That was eerie. Love their apartment. Of course I love it. Kudos on the move!
  • Wonderful fresh and positive re-start. Wishing this lovely young couple much fulfillment.

Everything being so bright and open makes it both cozy and super inviting. I’d love to have a place like that.

I have the same desk as the husband and was worried it might not support dual monitor arms. Looks like it is working out just fine.

tHANK YOU Mat for always bringing us genuine stories or personal success. Their home is beautiful and together, they are a lovely couple. May you both continue to find happiness in your world. Thank you for sharing your home with all of us.
  • I just worry that the alternative living suggestion here is move to a French speaking province and work remotely so the language barrier isn't a problem. I feel like moving somewhere cheaper without the intent of integrating into that culture is not the correct mindset. I can't help but feel protective of that small bubble of french.
