Pancha Kosha - Five Sheaths that CANNOT Cover Atma

Published 2018-10-18
The five koshas - food, prana, mind, intellect, and bliss - cannot cover atma because atma pervades the universe. Understood according to the non-dual teachings of advaita Vedanta, such as those taught by Shankara, each kosha is a locus of identification, ignorance, and wrong conclusions about atma, the true self, sat chit ananda, limitless eternal consciousness.

annamaya kosha = body anna = food
pranamaya kosha = physiological energy prana = life force
manomaya kosha = mind manas = mind
vijnanamaya kosha = intellect vijnana or buddhi = intellect
anandamaya kosha = bliss

Swami Tadatmananda is a traditionally-trained teacher of Advaita Vedanta, meditation, and Sanskrit. For more information, please see: www.arshabodha.org/

  • I had a technical understanding of the koshas, but Thanks for making me realize how we think of them as ourselves. 🙏
  • @smausil
Pranaam, some questions/observations seeking clarifications 1- Kosha is not a sheath or layer, it means a gathering or accumulation. therefore annamaya kosha would not translate to food sheath, but rather 'body created by food', and similarly the rest adds to the human body (all sharira combined) 2- there is no relation of kosha and state of sleep, all koshas are always present. in deep sleep the focus is actually gone into repairing the body, creating muscles etc... the major bodybuilding and body repairing happens during deep sleep... and only if you are consciously focusing on something that the external world, body, senses(pratyahar) doesn't register in your focus... and ofcourse technically in samadhi, nothing exists... but its not applicable that koshas disappears without meditation with effort of ignoring them and focusing on something or nothing. kindly correct me humbly

  • Swamiji, thank you! As always, I quote the words of my guru, the blessed teacher of the whole world and humanity, Sri Ramana Maharshi: Visitor. Are the shells [koshas] material and are they different from the Atman? Maharshi. There is no difference between Spirit and matter. Modern science agrees that all matter is Energy. And Energy is power, or force [shakti]. Therefore, everything is dissolved in Shiva and Shakti, i.e., in the Atman and in the Mind. Koshas are just an appearance. In them, as such, there is no reality. The Highest Being is that from which this body is born, in which it lives and in which it dissolves. However, we think that we are within the body. Therefore, instruction is given: "Look inside." OM TAT SAT
