They have since updated my results: Southern Chinese + Taiwanese: 93.2% South Chinese (? lol kinda redundant but ok) 5.9% Austronesian 0.9% no more Mongolian/Manchurian DNA! and an increase in Austronesian DNA!
  • @tc2334
Love how you just casually mention you don't have a sense of smell. I had no idea that was a thing. lol
  • Amazing video. Very interesting to see your results. Great job
  • I lived in Wuxi (in Jiangsu) in 2016. I taught English. In Wuxi it rained and rained all year long. Summers in Wuxi were hot and rainy while winters were cold and rainy.
  • @TranHungDao.
Taiwan was austronesian for centuries until 17th century.
  • @dawalrus
I got a very similar result! 99.6 Chinese/Taiwanese and 0.4 Austronesian. My first city under Chinese is also Guangdong. I thought it would have been Fujian. It might just be because they don’t have enough ppl from other provinces doing this test. My results actually changed a month after I did it because they received more dna tests from new customers.

Hi, fellow Ku (顧) here. My grandfather is also from Jiangsu.

When you mentioned you have a bit of austronesian in your dna, Taiwanese indigenous, Southern Chinese indigenous, Indonesia/malaysia indigenous, Māoris, Filipinos are of austronesian heritage. People in Madagascar are of admixture heritage of African and Austronesian, this is because Madagascan peoples are direct descendants from people who are indigenous to Kalimantan (Indonesia.) I too did my dna test. I gaoshan blood in me. Gaoshan is an indigenous tribe in Taiwan who are also austronesian. I also have some Malay and Indonesian in me as well. This is all due to the spice trade.
  • Hair and eye color doesn't actually come in the color of Black. We have varying shades of brown. The more melanin, the more black appearing the shade of brown will seem.
  • the austronesian could have come from fujian all the way up the coast to shanghai maybe not from taiwan at all

I do my own personal research of the silk route, spice route. I am very interested in learning about the original inhabitants of different countries, different cultures. that is why I did an ancestral dna on my self.
  • You should try importing the raw data to GEDmatch if you are really interested. 23andme’s Chinese samples are mostly from Guangdong since those were the majority who went to US.

Your DNA and background is probably more interesting than a test can tell you. I think there would be much for you to explore in the history of Fujian and Hokkien culture. As opposed to just assuming you're part of this monolithic Han identity.

  • I wanna do it with 23andMe, I did my DNA test with Ancestry. So I will try this company too
  • Im wondering if you could do a video on Taiwanese dialect (Dai wan hue)? It’s surprising but actually Guangdong province has a lot of Minnan speakers, actually the whole coast of Guangdong is minnan (from Chaozhou to zhanjiang/Hainan) except for Hong Kong, Macau, and Taishan city. Hong Kong surprisingly has alot of Fujian and Chaozhou people.
  • Taiwanese are mainly from southern Fujian and Guangdong province. That’s why you would get Guangdong province. Fujian and Taiwan both have austronesian ancestry compared to other provinces, because the ancestor of Austronesian is both Taiwan and Fijian’s coast. That’s why some fujianese look Filipino and Indonesian. Guangdong is mainly Hakka and Cantonese which are both more closer to each other in terms of dialect and both migrated from Central Plains of China to Guangdong via Jiangxi province hence which is why Gan and Hakka are also close as well.
  • I found this interesting in that if you were at all curious before, this could finally clear up any lingering questions you may have had. Was it satisfying for you, like it can be comforting, in a way? It was good seeing you again, btw--maybe there's another game to follow the beginning of this new year, perhaps? Speaking of which, Happy New Year, Daniel! :D
