How to deal with Loss and Grief?

Published 2020-05-07
Dave Goldberg was a husband and a father of two. His loved ones described him as a smart, funny, and very generous person.

In 2015, Dave Goldberg left this world leaving behind a 7 years old daughter, 10 years old son and his wife, Sheryl Sandberg.

Sheryl held her children tight in her arm and told them their father was gone. With teary eyes she watched Dave’s casket being lowered into the ground. Heaviness all over. Every breath a struggle.

Her Option A: a life with her husband Dave was gone. Now she was left with her Option B: a life without Dave.

Life is never perfect. We all suffer from loss and grief. And when loss and grief strikes like a lightning bolt and our option A is shattered, we are forced to live with Option B.

Our Option B can arise from death of a loved one, heartbreaks, rejection, disappointment as our dream goes unfulfilled. You overcome all these setbacks, you live with your Option B by building resilience. And We can build resilience long before we face any kind of hardship and tragedy.

But how do we build resilience?

We build resilience by the way we deal with setbacks and process negative events. Psychologist Martin Seligman has spent his entire career researching how people deal with setbacks. He learned that our beliefs on three areas play a crucial role on how fast we recover from setbacks. Based on these three beliefs, Seligman defined 3 P’s.
(1) personalization—the belief that we are at fault;
(2) pervasiveness—the belief that an event will affect all areas of our life; and
(3) permanence—the belief that the aftershocks of the event will last
Forever.
