Regardless of how you feel about the outcome, Sauron melting the frozen throne by sitting on it is pretty metal
  • Asmon just dropping pretty obscure Tolkien trivia at the start of this was genuinely impressive

I think the biggest argument for a Sauron victory (that sadly wasn't mentioned) is that the One Ring's influence scales with the influencee's power and ambition. And Arthas is both very powerful and very ambitious. The only reason Hobbits seem more resilient to the Ring is because they are neither. And as soon as Frodo was in a position of power to destroy the One Ring, its influence peaked to the point he refused to throw it in. The only reason the One Ring was destroyed was because Gollum showed up and fought Frodo for it, ultimately falling into Mount Doom as a result of its own influence over others. This is intentional as to Tolkien, good does not destroy, and evil does not create. Evil destroys everything, and in the end, it destroys itself.

Sauron: "I'll tear out your heart!" Arthas: "You will find nothing there!" Such a BA line for Arthas to say in my opinion

Sauron wasn't afraid of Gandalf specifically, he was hyper paranoid. He was afraid Gandalf was there, like him, seeking power and thus seeking the One Ring. He feared Gandalf getting his hands on the Ring and then pose a serious threat to Sauron.
  • Right off the bat I did not expect Asmon to be popping LOTR facts the way he was.

On Frostmourne being shattered, you have to remember that Sauron was a apprentice of Aule, the Valar of smiths, and forged his own weapons. That mace was definetly flowing with enchantments and secret godly technuiqes that sauron possessed. It was also based on Grond, Morgoths mace, which was one of the most powerful weapons in the setting I belive.

Everyone forgets that it was Actually Elendil and Gil-Galad who actually brought down Sauron in combat. Isildur cut off the ring after. And to Isildur's credit he wasn't even all that corrupted after taking it, he was bringing the ring to Elrond when he was killed.

I'm not convinced that Sauron could shatter Frostmourne, but I am convinced Sauron could beat the Lich King
  • @marmyeater
30:07- Well, in the books Isiuldur only cut the finger off Sauron's corpse. Sauron's body was killed and his soul basically knocked out from fighting and killing Gil Galad and Elendil, two uber powerful characters.

All Arthas had to do was break his helmet, sending Sauron through a portal to the shadowlands where he would eventually die of boredom.
  • @quazarKiragon
Narsil was made of dwarven steel from the first age, but it was heavily enchanted that it could cut any armour or flesh regardless its toughness, after all its sister blade angrist cut the silmaril from the crown of morgoth, but with anduril which was reforged from the shards of narsil could effect spirits/ghosts, the irony of sauron is that despite he was morgoths general he was originally a forge smith and or craftsman

10:20 this is just amazing how good lotr looked. the cgi is miles ahead of any hero movies that came out in recent years
  • @edgyguy7084
Actually the one Ring does not turn who wears it invisible. It just amplifies ones strenght... Basically, if Asmon was to put the One Ring on, it would only just lead to instant hairloss...
  • @Blossompot
As a bigtime LOTR nerd, i have got to give Asmon props for his knowledge of the lore. This guy knows his stuff.
  • @dekudude8888
I think this fight is so close because both of these characters are so ill-defined and powerful that they can go from mountain level all the way to universal level depending on how you interpret the lore
  • @JrClips27
I'm pleasantly surprised how knowledgeable you are in Tolkien's legendarium
  • @swiftdasher
Honestly I think they're spot on when it comes down to experience. I don't necessarily agree on the power difference being notable enough to be an advantage, but the difference between 50k years and like 60 is absolutely massive

0:20 - I mean, Balrogs being beaten by Elves isn't a knock against the Power of the Maiar, it's just that Tolkien Elves (especially those of the first age and the greatest elven lords) were basically demigods in their own right (and had really good magic/weapons). I mean, yeah he lost and was killed, but Fingolfin was able to fight Melkor/Morgoth (aka the greatest of Tolkien's Ainur, a being second only to the one God Eru in power) in single combat, and did well enough to permanently wound him seven times over a long fight that shattered the lands around them. The greatest elven lords were certainly on the level of Maiar like the Balrogs, Sauron, and the like. 27:30 - Elvish magic was able to permanently wound Melkor... I don't see what makes Frostmourne (or Ashbringer) stronger than that. Sure it doesn't have the whole "holy space rock" shiny backstory but the results speak for themselves IMO.
  • To those who are in argument about if Sauron could break Frostmourne or those newer to death battles it is something to note that the animation that shows is not a definitive "this is how it would go down" situation but is just a way they put together a video for theatrics of it resolving in a way that the creators think is cool to watch.
