No water change for 9 months

Published 2023-09-14
This 90 gallons planted aquarium was setup On June 1st 2022. After I saw an experienced aquarium owner talk about how he does not change water at all on his aquariums and the way he did it, I wanted to try it. This month I have made my first 30% water change in 9 months due to heat raising my aquarium Temp over 5 degrees. Throughout the past 9 months, the Nitrate levels have been around 10-15 ppm. NH3 always 0.

How I achieved this? A combination of things. Lots of plants. 4 inch deep Substrate (EcoComplete) which absorbs a lot of the detritus = feeding plant roots. Not overstocking with fish. Finding the right feeding balance. I feed once per day now. Food variety for fish health. Healthy food. A good light with night/day cycle. C02 injection for the plants. The results are good and the fish are happy and healthy.
