A collector's gem: Retro Set by Schminke, 8 half pans. First impressions and spontaneous landscape.

Hello friends!
I’m Elisabetta, an Italian watercolor artist with a passion and a curiosity for art supplies and pigments.

As you know, Schmincke has recently released some Retro Products; they include different sets, with current paint but original vintage design.
Today I'm swatching the wonderful little set of 8 half pans.

I am also trying to paint a small spontaneous landscape to test out this colour!
As usual, I would love to hear from you! Comment please!

Thank you for having the pigment information listed on the swatches. 🙂

Thanks for the review, Elisabetta! It's always a pleasure to watch your videos ❤ Ciao!

I have a few of those bijou palettes. I find it easier to put the pans in them if you turn them so they line up horizontally. Great video as always
  • @mombomb2012
Your sweater looks adorable as well! (: Thanks, I learn so much from your swatching!

Thanks for the nice video 💜 always a pleasure to watch. I bought the set because of the retro design (I love historical things) and because it's such a cute little palette. The colors weren't ones I would have chosen but the reason why they've chosen them is because of the historical background. (If you're interested in the background story how this retro line was made/ companies history I have a video about that). Wish you a wonderful day/ wonderful Valentine's Day ❤
  • I just ordered this pallet and after your video I can't wait for it to arrive. I got drawn to it because of the colors. I live in Spain and I think they will fit my environment. I made up a limited pallet myself with eight colors of my choice and I find myself always going back to this more limited pallet and mixing from there. Paintings this way always seem to look more organic with the colors relating to each other. Your little landscape by the way is amazing.

You put the paints back in the box the wrong direction, they should sit long side top and bottom so there is space for the bar to hold them in. With Winsor & Newton their pans are narrower, so I can up end them and get 5 across on the top and bottom using magnetic tape to hold them in as you can’t get the bar in that way around. The middle will hold 4 more paints again horizontally. I bought this palette it’s so cute. I don’t want to take retro labels off the paints! 😂 Your little landscape is beautiful ❤️

Love the palette, paints, and your painting. Your landscapes have been outstanding. I believe it's your loose style that really shines. 😍 Congratulations on making a whole sweater.....I would probably stop at a simple potholder. 😂

When I first started painting with watercolors, I didn't care for granulation or opaque colors. That's when I started looking, found, and purchased Schmincke's finest UMBlue. 😂 I still really enjoy using it, too.

This is incredible, I love looking at retro supplies ☺☺☺

Nice sketching... I really like this vintage design, especially the blocky font. Not sure about the chosen color palette but maybe I'll try it. Thank you very much and keep knitting on.
  • @Adoratek
Very nostalgic and warm leaning mix chart. I like it.
  • You came up with such beautiful mixes in your sketch. The colours work well together. 😊
  • Your painting turned out so pretty. Thanks for sharing the retro set I was wondering what it was like. I wonder if their other half pans will fit in there and then you could pick your colors.
  • @MsRain49
You do beautiful landscapes, and this one is no exception. ❤
  • @sonyaoart
oooh this is perfect for Valentine's Day 💝
  • That's a nice Yellow Ochre, a color I tend to stay away from due to its pasty, mustard-ish tone. Maybe it's the lighting, but the Viridian seems blue-ish, more like Manganese Blue.

Thank you for the lovely review, Elisabetta! I adore your little landscape painting, it’s so beautiful. I’ve treated myself to the same little set, and I wish they had replaced either the ochre or the raw umber by the cochenille red. That would have been a more balanced palette, IMHO.  But you are right, a limited choice of colours makes you more creative. While you were swatching I thought a combination of only the two last colours would make a splendid almost monochromatic study. Looking forward to discovering the possibilities offered by this set - It’s still waiting for me because I haven’t had the chance to use it yet.
