I made a couple of ring lights and people were asking me for a video on how to make one. This is my first attempt at a how to video so naturally I learned a LOT about how NOT to make a how to video. If you have any questions or comments leave them below or find my page on facebook.

Periodically I will be uploading video/content about my DIY projects and reviews on equipment that I own or have worked with. Hopefully it will help people learn something and avoid some pitfalls.

Best way of contacting me is commenting below or visiting my facebook fanpage. I'll try and respond asap.

@mrsillyclips The tutorial was requested by people who had seen pictures of my ring light. As far as just one video goes, I'm planning on recording other videos to review equipment, show DIY projects, and other information. But for now you're right, just one video =)

Agreed. I've used it for photography and I guarantee that I would have MUCH better results with a professional ring light. My personal opinion is once you make the decision to charge for your work you owe it to your clients to start investing more money into your gear and skills. DIY stuff can work great and CAN be used professionally but there is something to say about using professionally manufactured products to produce a more professional looking result.

thanks! just what i needed to complete my pvc ring light! ill have to make do with 12 in pieces however

I had thought about it but realized I would have to drill holes for the wires to come out at each light and then go back into the PVC pipe. Seemed like more work than necessary to me so I opted to just have them on the outside, but I can see how it would look cleaner that way.

@Carlodimaximus I've used LEDs for smaller projects but in the past it seems like LEDs always had really dramatic falloff so it they have to be a lot closer to your subject. (Which actually isn't that bad since they don't really heat up) I think newer LEDs are probably much better though. LEDs tend to be a lot more work to solder everything too. I've been looking at buying an LED light panel for a while and I own some DJ lighting that used LEDs and absolutely LOVE them.

could you add an annotation to the frugal filmmaker dimmer wiring vid, I found it on my own, just for a bit more convenience ya know what i mean? great vid, I'm going to try this over the weekend

Thanks! This is great ideal I was looking for the ring light 18 to 19 inch but all the ring light on the markets are really for close up shot and if you step away from the light, light just becomes small point but your's is big I guess it will create bigger catch eye on photo.
  • @CarloMario
Great stuff. Thanks for the video... Have you used leds?

i hate how everyone just never even mentions the stand and or tripod they put the ring light on. It's one of the most important things & everyone just passes it by or slightly mentions it likt " oh I have some screws, a few nail, a tripod i have laying around, and some chords"    :-(
