I love chatting with Simon Mills, he has a wonderful breadth of knowledge across the huge spectrum of different herbs and spices. And he can talk eloquently and sensitively about them, in a manner respectful of both the traditional beliefs and uses of them, as well as the science that may or may not support their claims.

Today we talk about the use of spices and what extra benefits they may be adding to our diets beyond simply “antioxidants”.
We talk about bitters and tonics and why they may work.
We explore how spices may impact our gut microbiota and potentially influence their health benefits.
Rosemary and sage on the brain, ginger for colds and how traditional antiseptics worked.

Simon Mills is a University of Cambridge graduate in medical sciences who has been a herbal practitioner in Exeter UK since 1977. He has been a complementary health pioneer from the inception of the term in 1979, and later in the fields of integrated health, selfcare and social prescription. He is now focusing on education through the public websites herbalreality.com and for professionals working with co-author Prof Kerry Bone at millsandboneacademy.com

  • I studied herbal medicine at Westminster Uni (2008) and Simon Mills textbooks and knowledge were fundamental. I could listen to him all day...then and now. Such a joy to see him appearing regularly with you educating the public about the power of herbs 🌿💚
  • I make a 40 species tree and herb leaf tea which we drink daily mixed into a 14 different powdered organic spice, morninga, turmeric Brahmi et. al. Recently started structuring the tea water before consuming, wow Your humm response to the said message is identical to the humming happy Zebu cows and bulls make to their calves or liked human caregivers…the positive vibration of good energy emitted by your humm enables the voice message to be heard Thank you for the black cumin and cardamom spices I will added to our structured water tropical fruit leaf tea🐸 Excellent discussion

I was encouraged to introduce more spices in my diet. It supported my metabolism and with it helped my. Get up and go. I steadily lost weight with commitment to dietry changes.
  • As a long time resident of Japan, I’ve learned that many people who don’t like green tea is because it’s prepared improperly making it quite bitter. Unlike regular tea, green tea needs water that has cooled for a minute or two. It shouldn’t be steeped as long as black tea. I’ve never seen a Japanese person use tea bags as those would be of a lesser quality than loose leaf teas, which is what the Japanese would primarily use.

I’ve been using a ton of spices over the last few years thanks to podcasts such as this one. I’m a 61-year-old woman and my doctor is concerned about my very low white blood count. Could certain spices cause this? I never get sick, knock on wood!
