There's only one speed in the front so only one gear in the back will match (maybe) that means you'll be pulling with the front or pushing with the back in any other gear.

Would help in the snow. When I was young I put thumb tacks thru the tire and glued them on the inside and when I put air in the tube it worked great. I could ride my bike on ice!
