Illness and trauma are defining how we live. 45% of Europeans suffer high blood pressure, and nearly 70% of Americans take at least one prescription drug.

We tend to believe that normality equals health. Yet what is the norm in the Western world? Joining us live on stage in London, the renowned physician, addiction expert and author Gabor Maté dissects the underlying causes of this malaise – physical and emotional, and connects the dots between our personal suffering and the pressures of modern-day living.

Over four decades of clinical experience, Dr Gabor Maté has found that the common definition of ‘normal’ is false: virtually all disease is actually a natural reflection of life in an abnormal culture, as we grow further and further apart from our true selves.

Filled with stories of people in the grip of illness or in the triumphant wake of recovery, this life-affirming talk from the beloved physician and author will show how true health is possible – if we are willing to embrace authenticity above social expectations.

Gabor Maté is a retired physician, bestselling author and renowned speaker, highly sought after for his expertise on addiction, trauma, stress and childhood development. He has written four bestselling books published in nearly thirty languages, including the award-winning In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction. He has been awarded the Order of Canada (his country’s equivalent of the MBE) and the Civic Merit Award from his hometown, Vancouver, for his ground-breaking medical work and writing.

  • The problem with Dr Gabor Mate is he makes too much sense, too simply - there's not enough money in it, or need for PhDs. It takes only observation and reflection to connect the dots, but most of us don't. Gabor Mate is one of the most vital voices on the planet right now.

Thank you, Dr Matè. I am 71, and through listening to your explanations about childhood trauma and how it influences who we are, I have been able to reclaim and honour my emotions and the parts of myself that I buried so long ago, to be able to survive. I now realise that I was a workaholic from a very young age, because I never felt ‘good enough’, even though I had parents who tried to do the best they could. I had other issues too, and now when I am triggered, I go back to my childhood to understand the trigger and then I can let myself feel the emotions that I could not release until now. Letting myself feel all these buried emotions has been amazing and is helping me to be my real self. Nature gave us all of our emotions to inform us on how to react. We just need to listen to these.
  • This man is a lighthouse for truth. Every person on the planet needs to watch this on repeat.

I worked for eighteen years as a psychotherapist in a therapeutic prison. The cause of offending behaviour is clearly rooted in childhood trauma. The quote at the end from John O'Donahue; "Our biography is not our full identity. There is a place in the soul where we are not wounded, and that place is always there." is an absolute truism. In offender rehabilitation, helping offenders to connect with that place is the beginning of their process of change.

  • He speaks so much truth it makes me tear up. He is a shaman, I feel like he is the soul of healing. I am so grateful for him in our world.

I was at this talk. He’s a fantastic public speaker and his work is so so important. I hope this book becomes as big and influential as The Body Keeps the Score. Truly life changing.
  • I really appreciate the empathy Dr Gabor demonstrates when speaking on racism! The trauma of racism and the shame it comes with is definitely worth studying. As a black woman, I am constantly having to put my actions and words through many filters before they come up because someone may accuse me of playing the ‘race card’! I and many I know are currently managing autoimmune diseases! Racism is a killer to those on the receiving end!
  • He is so brilliant and exactly on point. I’m so grateful for his revolutionary contribution to humanity. Love him! ❤❤❤
  • God bless this man. I hope he is still around for a long time and able to shine his light upon humanity.

I have attempted to meditate many times in my life and prior to this CD the only success I've experienced is with live guided meditation. youtube.com/post/Ugkxzpa8CIfZcihW4Z0F_ja0QF3W9KIat… This is the first CD I've used that cuts through my unmedicated ADHD and enables me to truly relax and experience a quiet and energizing interval. The instructors voice is very soothing and pleasant to listen to. I am easily able to sit successfully through the entire CD, and for quite some time after. I cannot adequately express how tremendously helpful this CD has been on my spiritual journey!! Two thumbs up and 10 stars!

At thirty two minutes, I felt recognized for the first time in my life. Thank you Gabor.

"Healing comes as a result of recognizing a greater purpose in your life." "This is your world. This is why you have come. You did not come to sleep on a beautiful planet, but to help preserve it and protect the human family from decline and from subjugation." Both quotes from The New Message from God which is an endless source of wisdom received to serve our times and the times to come.
  • I belong to a men's mental health support group and Gabor Maté is very much a topic of conversation, especially his article on "Authenticity versus Attachment". Gabor Maté is the person of our time who joins the dots others dare not because of all the factors Gabor is referring to. He makes so much sense in today's social/cultural environment.
  • Thank you Dr Gabor Matè. Bless you for walking on this precious earth and sharing your gifts with us all 💚💙🙏🏻🌀
