    imho 99% of this film is the fantasy of the young man who is obviously down on his luck as he comes out of a 'doss house' (that's a place where vagrants can sleep for very little cost) at the very beginning. I can provide arguments to back this up, but it would mean spoilers, but for example look what happens to Thomas at the very end of the film! if I'm right that would also account for the dream like quality of the film.
