Dystonia, Head Tremors, and Depression

About six months ago my head started shaking. At the time, it was so mild, no one could notice it. It was just a light shaking sensation. But it has progressively become worse. I am in a constant state of shaking my head "no". This past week I was diagnosed with "cervical dystonic tremors", also refered to as dystonia. Which, as Dystonia.org puts it, dystonia is " a neurological disorder where incorrect messages from the brain cause muscles to be over-active resulting abnormal postures or unwanted movement."

Aside from that, I have battled depression my entire life. Id really, honestly love to know if anyone else out there is expereincing this too. I know I can't possibly be alone in these symtpms. And if you do expereince depression, dystonia, or temors, what have you found that works??

Thanks for sharing publicly your story. I am sorry that you are so young. You are not alone. I have the same issues. But I am 50 years old. I found that the amplitude of tremor mainly depends from sleep , rest and stress. (I also have orthostatic tachycardia syndrome all my life. Diagnosed before dystonia+ head tremor). I wish you the best. I am teacher in school. My work helps me to resist and not become unsociable because of this. . the students, colleagues etc are accepting me as I am. So I am lucky for this .

as far as I can remember, it was 10 years ago. every time my head shakes, i'd just hold my breath until it stops. always ignored this and my head shakes the way yours do. thank you for sharing your experience
  • I've also been diagnosed with cervical dystonic tremors. My head shakes in the same motion as yours, but maybe a little more severe. I'm 41. I first noticed the tremor at age 19. My mother has the same issue. She has never been diagnosed. It gets progressively worse with age, and my head shakes worse than my mother's did when she was my age. I decided to look for answers in 2017, at the age of 40. I'm so tired of the embarrassment. I don't get out much because of it. I feel like people stare and judge. I'm very self-conscious. November 2017, I received my diagnosis. I naturally have low blood pressure, so most of the meds prescribed to treat my symptoms are off limits. I've been getting the botox every 3 months - but it wears off after 6 weeks, and then the tremor is full force. I take primidone at night, which helps a little for the next day. I've tried a CBD vape pen, that calmed my tremor a little, but took my energy. I sleep full and well. I eat smart. I exercise regularly. My tremor just won't stop. I cry about it a lot. Years ago I was diagnosed with bi-polar 1 & 2, borderline personality disorder, major depressive disorder, and anxiety. I do see a connection with my emotions and tremor. When I'm going through emotional turmoil, my tremor owns my head. I'm a severely emotional person, so I'm basically screwed. I take 450mg 3x's daily of a mood stabilizer for my bi-polar, and that also contributes to my tremor. My neurologist is awesome and takes his time to listen. My next appointment, we will be setting up an appointment for DBS. Under the knife might seem extreme for some - but I'm willing to try anything to calm this embarrassing tremor. Thanks for sharing. ❤

Thank you for sharing this with us, I have head tremors very similar to you but was sent for an MRI scan and it came back normal. But the tremors continue and after seeing your posts I began to get really worried that I had dystonia too.A friend recommended   new vision therapy,  I spoke to the guy on the phone and he said since the scan has come back clear he thinks it is ablockage of a blood vessel to the brain and he knew all my symptom's I was amazed. He is going to try and unblock this blockage for me , I think with massage and healings I will let you know how I get on Take care x

I just watched your video and I have to say that I am in the process of researching this. I have been going through some of this for sometime now and I just said to myself that it will pass. It hasn't and I also get individuals looking at me like like I am nervous, but I feel the head tremors. I thank your for taking the time out and speaking about this as more people can be aware of this. I had experienced depression for most of my childhood up until I was 18. but after that I have not. I want to get this checked out and see what can be done.

I know this is an old video, but I’m glad I stumbled upon this because I think this is what’s going on with me. I’ve had tremors for almost a year now, starting with my left hand only. Now it’s both hands and at all times everyday, except when at rest. I get these tremors in my legs sometimes, my eyelids, but I’ve also noticed I have a tremor in my head, a very mild one, but it’s there. Essential tremor was my first diagnosis but my neurologist said no to that and is currently suspecting Wilson’s disease. I also have never felt like I’ve been truly happy. The depression has always been bad. I am an isolator.

I distract myself with music when I feel sad/depressed/alone/lonely. I'm always having to wear headphones.

I'm so happy I found your videos. Was googling Dystonia at 4am (should be sleeping) and watched one of your latest vlogs then started back at the beginning. I've been recently diagnosed too with cervical dystonia and kept thinking I had a pinched nerve or was stress related or something that would go away...but was getting worse so went to the doctor who referred me to a neurologist. Pretty much the same as yours but not constant at this stage. He gave me a prescription for medication the second time I went back but not keen on that option so was googling for natural remedies and found you 🤗. Thank you so much for vlogging I will watch all your videos...I too have autoimmune issues (Coeliac, arthritis and sjogrens) all manageable but this head shaking was getting me a bit worried ...the joy of life. 😊

Good things come to those who believe and are willing to learn from others may you be blessed everyday every way a healing is taken place now
  • Thank You so much. I have been diagnosed with Cervical Dystonia and Dystonic Tremor. I have had this for several yrs, finally went to a Dr. and had MRI no tumor. I was so glad to hear that. They say I also have Essential Tremor in my hands. Yes I have depressing moments, don't go out except if I need to and love to walk my dog. I couldn't take my head shaking anymore, was so hard to read. Drove me nuts. So my Dr. sent me to another and I am now receiving Botox treatments. They go in the back of my head and neck. She started with a low dosage the first time. I felt so good. 4 months or 3 can't remember, went with same dosage cus I did have trouble swallowing, so that's why she went with the same dosage again, did not work at all. So on my follow up appmt, she said she will increase it, just had it done last week and it helped. I'm going to do it again in May I think, I will have to look it up. But I am so glad I found You and listened to You. You looked good to. Someone said to me one day I looked stupid walking around with my head tilted, but that was my way of keeping my head from shaking. Yes Botox has helped me. But thank You Sweetie. I know I'm not alone. God Bless💕
  • Your video just touched me entirely...The tremors, manic depression, anxiety, and ptsd do NOT mix...My mom has REALLY bad tremors, as do a couple other of my siblings...in some theyre less, in others more...NOW, as I age (31 soon) I notice its getting worse...some days are much better than others, but my head, hands, and sometimes body shake...especially when anxious...Right now im in the process of trying to figure out what triggers/helps ease them...Im also planning to talk to my doctor about it as well, bc neurological problems run through my family (both sides)...At the moment im tackling a few other medical issues, which has me frazzled...I will say it's tough...ive broken down several times about it in the recent months, but I dont want to think that this is or has to be my fate...I feel you so much! Thank you for this video...I know it was posted years ago...So if you dont mind my asking...How are you these days? Has it bettered or (hopefully not) worsened? How have you coped?
  • @sahilkh101
I appreciate you to record the videos with head shaking disease. You know, Sometimes there is no head shaking with you. I too face the head shaking but not always. I believe it's because of anxiety and depression. Hope you will cure soon.
  • @elise7148
I'm 21 (the tremors started when I was 20) and I've been diagnosed with dystonia. I have tremors in my neck and jaw, and also I'm struggling with depression and anxiety and just feeling very tired in general, often (I had to quit acting school because it got so bad). For me I've been going to an amazing neuro chiropractor who helps me reduce the tremor with specific eye movement exercises. I've also tried acupuncture and it helped with the tremors for a little while and a lot with the anxiety and feeling less tense. I really hope they'll find a cure for this because it's really not a fun thing having to live with. Sending you lots of good thoughts from Norway!! <3
  • @krissykat3450
I find that wearing a soft cervical collar for your neck helps!! It looks silly but do what we gotta do!
  • @Charlotte74347
Yesssssss . ......I have the same kind of depression.....it's not unusual..... Im always feeling like I can not be super happy.... where I need to feel happy. It is scary to get tremors ,even mild ones....or muscle contractions that I can not control. Twitches etc....you get use to it... no one looks at you funny ,don't worry about what people think...
  • @kellydyer4572
Thanks for talking about this. I'm 29 and have been diagnosed with cervical dystonia for about a year now. It's really uncomfortable sometimes, kind of like my neck is getting a work out and embarrassing to be in social situations, so anxiety and depression for me is a definite. I just wish I could reduce the shaking even if just a little bit. A neurologist offered Botox, but I'm not ready for that. The potential for paralysis scares me.
