Road to Hana | 12 Best Stops | When Maui was Closed but the Hana Highway was Open

Published 2020-10-16
In August 2020, we drove the Road to Hana. The #Hana Highway had just reopened but #Maui was still closed to visitors. Here are our 12 favorite stops without the crowds.

The Road to Hana has changed a lot with no parking signs and more traffic. Let a local tour company show you how to do the Road to Hana right. Receive 10% off your booking with promo code HVG10 using this link: thehawaiivacationguide.com/activities/road-to-hana…

It was a surreal experience and one we hope to never repeat. The shops, restaurants, and food trucks were all closed but the waterfalls and hiking trails were still open. We didn’t miss the crowds but we missed the people.

Here are our favorite 12 Road to Hana stops. We did the Hana Highway in 1.5-days so we don’t recommend doing all these stops if you can only do a 1-day drive. Take your time and enjoy it.

  • The Road to Hana is about the journey and the destination. Henry, Erica, and I had a blast exploring the Hana Highway before Maui opened to visitors. LOVE Maui! Usually go there 1/year...missed you in 2020 Maui... I'm amazed by how many people don't do the 'road to Hana' when there. It's a great way to spend the day stopping at all the waterfalls, swimming and short hikes (like the bamboo forest). It's not about the drive- it's all about the stops.
  • @Cragozy
Probably have to rent one of those cabins that I did not know about! Thanks again!

  • Love your videos. Last time we went to Maui we didn't have kids but now have 2 girls close to your son's age. Its awesome to see all the activities to do there with small children. Also the drone footage was awesome!
  • The shaka app is amazing!!! We found so many things we never would have without it.

Aloha you three! Cannot believe how Henry is growing like the proverbial weed! We have only done the Hana road trip once and that was because we were advised to do it with a tour group, however we were stuck with an ignorant mother and daughter who had no concept of time and therefore we missed some of the stops. This woman was so stupid she even asked our driver if the water went all the way around the island, we thought he was going to choke. Next time we are there we want to do it ourselves so mahalo for the video. Just makes us want to get back ASAP. Stay safe, maybe 2021
  • Super helpful, thank you. (FYI - I DMed you a question on Instagram. Thank you!) I love your channel, I have really enjoyed all of your videos.

The Shaka app is awesome for all of Maui and the Big Island. Used both earlier this year.

Thank you for the tips, this was a great start for our 7-day trip...I don't think you added this to your video, but you need a reservation for Black Sand Beach. Some wonderful residents of the area that heard my child crying in the car about not being able to see the Lava tube, told him it wasn't that great of a beach (they probably said that to calm him down lol we will make reservations next time) and recommended us to go to a different black sand beach and to Hamoa Beach, which was the family's favorite beach and after we ate at Huli Huli Chicken at Koki beach, which was a gem of its own. It is run by 7 local families which rotate to run the stand. Their food is delicious, cheaper than other stands ( I think $16 vs. $25 at Nahuki Marketplace) large portions, and amazing customer service. Although the beach is very rocky, my little paleontologist-wannabe spent a lot of time searching through the rocks for "fossils" and all kinds of goodies. We wished we could have spent more time there, but we did hit almost every step on your list in one day and we didn't want to drive home in the dark. A lot of the waterfalls were blocked due to road work, but Pua’a Ka'a State Wayside Park was a great stop, to use the bathroom, and my little ones felt safe to venture into the waterfalls. It is deep, so we stopped on our way back for a second time with floaties and we were all able to get in. Such fun! Thanks again for all the information!
