I think it should've also been mentioned that Dragon Quest (1986) came before Final Fantasy (1987). It should also be noted that DQ kickstarted the Turn-based JRPG genre we know today, paving the way for the creation of all the other turn-based console JRPGs that spawned due to it's success (Final Fantasy, Phantasy Star, Mother/EarthBound, and so on).

I laughed hard at the "Pikachu, Charizard" part lol

Bruh, you all keep hating on the man. He made a very good video as an introduction for new Jrpg players. No vets like you. Some flaws but nicely done man. Hope you achieve the 20k, greetings from Argentina!

The fact that Tales Of, Xenoblade, Fire Emblem, and Ys are all on here makes me so happy I know it's easy to find people online who like these things, but sometimes irl it feels like I'm the only one The Tales Of series has so much meaning to me, and I feel like it's so underated! This is coming from a person who has beaten five Tales games. I know, the fact I'm saying this has little to no meaning, but thank you for including this wonderful series in your video.

Yeah Suikoden series feels like a huge omission from this list, otherwise you got most of the popular jrpgs out there.

If you made part 2 one day. Don’t forget to add Wild arms series 🤠

8:40 well actually.. the travel log you tlak about is also a more modern feature of the Ys series. Infact, it wasn't a thing pre Ys 7 iirc, where the storyline was always revolving around the Eldeen and how they disappeared from the surface, which led Adol ever since the first game around to look to help the people he mets along the way, from simple retrieving of some jewelry, to some flowers up to silver bells or rings and wands that let you transform for example into a Roo for puzzle solving for example (and or worldbuilding) or casting magic that helps Adol on his journey. As much as I am happy you mention the somewhat known bump combat: I kinda wish you had mentioned the pre team fight oriented hack & slash titles in the series, aka the ark engine or three swords combat titles which are Ys 3's remake, Ys 6 - Ark of Napisthim and Ys Origin, which also appear different to people due to the difficulty being quite higher in compare to what modern Ys games do to the player as modern combat, even on the highest difficulty setting, is either getting oneshotted or wannabe-Dark Souls, sadly (which happened due to the target demographic group being changed as the originally PC focused company Falcom has gone into console game development due to japan's economy not really doing them any favors, see ZWEI2's poor sales for such an astonishing well crafted charming RPG where you also play as two characters basically at once).

I’d say most Fire Emblem games are not standalone, but most can be played this way. Just do not play (New) Mystery or Radiant Dawn first (and Thracia spoils some of Genealogy). That Legend of Heroes explanation felt very safe which is fair lmao I’m surprised the gameplay wasn’t mentioned? Not only does the world expand each game, but technology is constantly progressing and this is shown best through the gameplay changes every new game.

The tales series just hits different imo…..Symphonia was a great introduction for me. It was like “super smash bros: the RPG“ for me growing up.
  • @Evilriku13
While talking about Star Ocean, you could have also mentioned at the end of that segment that that series is actually connected, or was connected rather, to the Tales of Franchise due to Wolf team first working on ToP, getting disrupted by Namco and then leaving nearly completly with the whole team to create Tri-Ace with Enix (I might be wrong thereif Tri-Ace was created after but it's been a bit messy there) as a publisher so the reason why there are some similiar beats and themes and say cooking and other specifics that are usually very unusual in the RPG genre come up, then it is because of their relationship to the Tales of Franchise in the 90s.

I wasn't expecting it to be brought up since it's pretty obscure in the US, but Super Robot Wars is a long running SRPG franchise like Fire Emblem. SRW features various mecha series in each game and has them cross over with each other with some original characters to create a new story. The most recent mainline release, 30, was released on Steam, and it alongside V, X, and T were also released on PS4 and Switch in Asia, but they all have official English translations.

Ys, Legend of Heroes and tales of series are beyond amazing
