The story of Dan's Vintage Tele – refret, rewire & much more!

Welcome to the show – Dan here, hello! In 2015 I found my dream guitar: a 1965 Fender Telecaster. Four years later, I was lucky enough to own it. This video documents my journey with this astonishing guitar, as we talk through various topics including 'player-grade' vintage instruments and how – if you're thinking about spending serious amounts of cash on a guitar – a distinctly 'non-perfect' instrument is definitely worth considering.
Enjoy the video!

SCAM ALERT! Hello to everyone watching this. Please note we will NEVER promote competitions or prizes in YouTube comments sections. There are parties pretending to be us. So if ANYONE asks you to contact them saying you’ve won a prize and asks for details, please ignore them. Better still, please help us report them to YouTube. You have not won a prize, and it is not us. It’s happening right across YouTube, with collective apologies!

@38:40 I have more respect for Matt every time he appears on TPS. I was thinking when Dan was playing the Tele, “The new pickup winding is close, but we’re not there 100% yet.” And then Matt says exactly what we needed with the precise height adjustments. Amazing knowledge and experience.

Congrats Dan! That is a very guitar player thing to say. "I found the guitar of my dreams. I'm just gonna change the frets, and the pickups and the saddles and the wiring...".

One thing that really amazes me with both 'Dan and Micks' vintage guitar journeys is - When they both got the guitar of their dreams in there hands both suddenly seemed to take the next step up in playing standard. While I think a lot of the tone comes from the vintage instrument and pickups, I also think it is the affinity and connection to such an instrument that actually pushes us forward to more inspired playing. (At least this is what I get to hear when Dan and Mick play the instruments of their dreams)

It’s lovely to see you happy Dan. You play magnificently and will do this guitar justice. Enjoy!

My takeaway from these blogs is that quality of communication to a great luthier is perhaps more important than new, vintage, cheap or expensive. The transfer of the sound and feel in the players head to a great luthier that understands what changes to implement.

The only channel where 45 minutes can pass by so damn quickly. That was fascinating stuff!

Many of the viewers to this channel will resonate with the blissful joy of finding a ‘dream’ guitar, that scratches that itch inside your head. So I trust you will appreciate the depth of sentiment that goes into the simple word Congratulations on finding yours.

That Tele sounds great! Classic and playable, the smile on your face sets the TONE.. nice😎

That neck pick-up transformation is amazing. Great episode, thank you!

Just got my parts Tele put back together, this time with a rosewood neck and I’m loving it. Very hard to avoid making all your guitars similar. You’ve got to just embrace how their differences make you play differently and roll with it. Sounds great, Dan!

As jazz guy that uses the neck pickup on the tele almost exclusively, I was really disappointed in the neck tone initially. When I got to the portion of the video where you had the pickup rewound I was so excited to see how you addressed this. It sounds so alive now! Congratulations on this beautiful instrument! Now I want to hear you play more of those Pat Martino licks you mentioned in the last episode!
  • Unsurprisingly, this episode stands up to repeat viewing. So much insight and useful information. Thanks very much indeed team, a delight as always. ......bet Mr Gleeson's waiting list just went up again to boot!

Love this Dan. I have been searching a long time for a 60s SG Junior just like yours. Recently I have been buying teles and P90 guitars. Love them single coils. I was looking for a 60s SG Junior. I don't need two pickups. Buddy at work asked me if I could look at a guitar for him. His father in law died a year ago. I did all the work to find out what it was (pot dating, serial, etc). I told him they probably are $6k on Reverb. It's a 1966 SG Special. So they decided that they didn't want to go through the hassle. They said “maybe I would like it?” I told them I had limited funds in my guitar bank. I just bought it for $3k from them today. It's even better than what I thought. Literally all original and other than the tetanus threatening strings, it is perfect. Cannot wait to get it home and restring it.

I am so happy that you finally got the guitar you lost sleep over, it turned out amazing ! The only way I would ever own a classic guitar like that is if it was "players grade". I couldn't imagine owning any guitar I was afraid to play. Your repairs & mods really brought it to life. I love the fact you got it and made it your own.

One of the best transformational tones I've been able to witness online. Explained, expounded upon and experienced. I felt I was right there with you Dan. I may have to make some changes now myself after seeing and hearing these results. Congrats on your "new" ol' Tele!!
  • @TheBeriking
Fantastic video for an amazing instrument. Was half expecting Zack to sneak in a “drink” after saying “when I was working at Carter’s”. And Matt’s workstation is fast becoming one of my favorite places I’ve never been to. Although no seagull cries this time… Congrats Dan on your brilliant guitar!
