Explore Devil's Den at Gettysburg with the American Battlefield Trust

Published 2022-03-27
With the closing of Devil's Den for a six month rehabilitation project, the American Battlefield Trust wanted to provide visitors an opportunity to tour the site virtually. Join Garry Adelman and Kris White as they walk around the renowned Gettysburg site and detail the history of photography on the battlefield. (Devil's Den is now back open to the public).

You can learn more about the Rehabilitation Project by the National Park Service here: www.nps.gov/gett/learn/news/devils-den-rehab-proje…

The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

I really like the two-camera approach. Frequently in other videos I shout "Wait, turn that way!" and in this video one of the two cameras was always looking where I wanted to see.
  • More of this kind of presentations please. This video was great.

I got seriously into the Ken Burns series and the movie 'Gettysburg'. My confusion was a lack of North, East, West, South directions and multiple camera directions. Only a visit to the battlefield cleared it up. Amazing place.

This perspective is the best thing ever for those of us who can't travel for whatever reasons. This is exactly why I've been watching you guys for years.
  • @campsawyer
Thanks for this "before" video of Devils Den. I hope you will do another in 6 months to show the "after" view of all these shots.
  • @BarelyAwake
I love this format! As a map guy, I would love a pane showing a GPS (or pseudo-GPS) track of where you are and which way you are looking. Really enjoyed this!

Great video! I've spent a few days at Gettysburg, and it was a fantastic experience for anyone interested in history.

Great job lads. Looking forward to see how the rehabilitation project turns out.

Love the walkthroughs. As someone from Australia who’s unlikely to ever get to Gettysburg, these provide a really immersive experience
  • Loved this approach. Please do more of these. I finally went to Gettysburg last summer after wanting to go for 40 years and I cannot wait to go back. Great job you two.

Love this new style that you produced! The cameras are great, a little more wider view and crisp clear videos. And the way you two worked together, not over lapping one other when talking. Great job! Makes me want to visit and do some low light photography.

Having grown up in NJ, we visited and vacationed in Gettysburg many times. Now grown with a family of my own and living much further away, I have a great desire to bring my kids to the battlefield one day for them to experience it for themselves as I did when I was a kid. great memories. Thank you for these videos.

You all are simply THE BEST. Thank you so much for all that you do to preserve our U.S. heritage and history.

I like this format. These videos bring me right back to my childhood visit. I remember walking across a big open field hoping to find a bullet. It felt surreal even as a seven-year-old child to tread where so many lives were lost.

What a great approach to seeing the area! More such “walk arounds”, please!
  • @Deetzbaby

Really looking forward to seeing your videos for your next road trip of the Atlanta Campaign that will be happening very soon. Keep up the great work and always stay safe and thank you for all your doing to preserve our nation's battlefields.

I lived near Gettysburg for over 27 yrs and visited it regularly. Such an amazing and somber place to visit. Now moved to Nashville and miss Gettysburg greatly. Now its time to invest time in this areas rich CW history.

I enjoyed this new format for videos. In particular, I liked the split-screen format. (I'm glad you both held your cameras fairly steady and didn't swing them around too much, so there was little danger of vertigo!) I also enjoyed the fact that you showed the battlefield in a season other than high summer. I've been lucky enough to visit Gettysburg, but only during summer vacation. The rocks and pathways all look different when the trees are bare and the cool light of spring floods over everything. And finally, I thought you gave viewers about the right amount of background information. I've enjoyed some recent videos with titles like, "95 Seconds on the Antietam Battlefield," which don't have a lot of audio. They're fun videos too, but I seem to need more than the visual panorama to make sense of what I'm seeing.
