How to NOT judge and stereotype people? | GENERALIZATION instinct | Bill Gates' Favorite Book

Publicado 2020-04-18
“One of the most important books I’ve ever read―an indispensable guide to thinking clearly about the world.” – Bill Gates

When asked simple questions about global trends―what percentage of the world’s population live in poverty; why the world’s population is increasing; how many girls finish school―we systematically get the answers wrong. So wrong that a chimpanzee choosing answers at random will consistently outguess teachers, journalists, Nobel laureates, and investment bankers.

Factfulness by Hans Rosling, Anna Rosling Rönnlund, and Ola Rosling is an urgent and essential book that will change the way you see the world and empower you to respond to the crises and opportunities of the future.

So why are people so wrong about the world? Why are people worse than chimps on basic global facts?

If you think it’s because of people’s intelligence or education level, then it isn’t. Even highly educated people like medical students, university lecturers, scientists, journalists got less correct answers than chimps.

The fault is not in not knowing facts, the fault is in our way of thinking. The irony is that we don’t necessarily need to know all the facts to get basic global facts correct. We just need to improve our thinking tools.

Our thinking, our worldview has evolved to be overdramatic through millions of years of evolution. Our brain is hard-wired with basic instincts that helped our ancestors to survive and thrive in the Sahara. But this basic survival instinct creates extremely overdramatic worldviews. This overdramatic worldview distorts what we see and think of the world.

So the book “Factfulness” is about changing this overdramatic worldview into fact based worldview. Factfulness introduces ten overdramatic instincts that distort our perception of the world.

Factfulness is written by Hans Rosling with his son Ola Rosling and daughter-in-law Anna Rosling. Through decades of research, Hans Rosling with Ola Rosling and Anna Rosling came up with ten dramatic instincts

As of 10-10-2020 Black Rhino's are still listed as critically endangered by the WWF. Just a minor note, but if you do have a source for that I would love to see it just to know that they are doing better. They have increased in numbers, but are still listed critically endangered by the WWF. Ironically, I only did well on that beginning test because I decided to take the optimistic stance that we are moving forward in improving the standard of living across the planet. I probably would have flat out failed every answer on that tests if I was in a different mood. Being bi-polar can have its advantages. In regards to the larva and rats, it reminded me of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and how Winnie found the found they were served disgusting and Indiana points out that it is more than these people would eat in a week. Looking at things from the opposite side changes ones perspective entirely. It is easy to view the world from only your own eyes. As a Canadian I feel lucky to live in one of the most multicultural countries in the world. I may not get to travel as often as I want to, but here, the world gets to come to you via the diversity of the country. I've gotten to make friends with people from all over the planet that have come from all walks of life. If I had to list the best things about this country, its diversity would be number one. Great channel btw. I saw you quote Voltaire on another channel, so I had to give it a go. I checked this one out first as a sort of litmus test. When I see a video on Bill Gates it tends to go two ways. Either the video says he is a satanist working for the Illuminnaughty Lizard Men, or they don't do that. Thank you for doing the latter. I know we should generalize, but honestly give this a go some time if you want to see some of the lunacy out on YouTube. Well, I found this to be a pretty great video and a good summary of that book. I will have to pick up a copy soon. When I do I will comment again. You got a new sub though. Since a quote by one of my favourite authors brought me to you, I leave you with a quote from one of mine. He grew up in some of the most deplorable conditions and was able to overcome ingrained beliefs and views by travel and experience. Oh, and thanks for the tip about the elevators.
