Every year, eleventh grade students in the Math, Science, & Technology Magnet Academy at Roosevelt High School, in the Boyle Heights community of Los Angeles, do a "Service Learning Project." Working in teams to investigate a social justice topic, they engage geographic information systems (GIS) to explore, analyze, and present their data. Led by the social studies and English teachers, students build a deep understanding, which they present to the community.

This segment premiered at Esri's 2018 User Conference, as part of the "Making a Difference" award ceremony, in which Esri President Jack Dangermond gave the award to lead teachers Mariana Ramirez and Alice Im. (Any K12 school can acquire the same GIS software for free for instruction, at esri.com/schools.)
