Someone at work was trying to impress some Japanese girls we work with and bragging about how they went to a Japanese restaurant and slurped ramen loudly, because it's respectful and a compliment to the chef. I just sat there thinking "Yeah..... I won't say anything..."

i think in america it's become popular to sort of exagerate and romanticize these cultural differences because people are so fixated on the idea of foreign things being strange and quirky.

Funny to see this mentioned, "hikikomori". Although it is painted as a Japanese phenomenon, I think this happens all over the world. I did a paper on it and took a look at the role of the (absent) father in the Japanese family in connection to the hikikomori. It was very interesting.
