When Tradition Is Weaponized by Legalism: Jesus and the Sabbath

How had the Pharisees weaponized tradition into legalism? In Luke 14, is the man with dropsy a “plant” by the Pharisees to trap Jesus? Is Christ merely giving lessons in table etiquette or demonstrating a profound theological truth? How are both humility and faith postures of reception—and how is pride the opposite? How does Luke 14 echo sections from the Old Testament, Dead Sea Scrolls, Apocrypha, and other Jewish literature? This week, Chad Bird returns with an episode in Reading the Gospels through Hebrew Eyes.

I know how the loss of a child causes a feeling of “this isn’t the way it is supposed to be. No child should die before their parent”. Each week I looked for your return but understood the void of your absence. May God bring us both the prayers and peace of his people and his promise of the waiting embrace in the new Eden.
  • I am so sorry to hear about your loss. Can't imagine something like this. And yes like you said, soon we will see your son and my dad who passed away as well. Thank you very much for continuing serving GOD and HIS people.
  • Our hearts, here in New Zealand, go out to you and your family. Deeply saddened by the loss of your son, Luke, but greatly encouraged by the truth that he is now with Christ.

  • Of course, mere words cannot ease the sorrow of losing a child, more so under sudden unexpected circumstances. We know this personally. His earthly tribulations have ended. At this very moment he is not mourning his departure, but instead is totally contented, totally safe, totally loved in His eternal kingdom, forever. All the beauty and love of God fills him. In our human minds it impossible to even begin to comprehend the joy and happiness he is experiencing in his new home. May Our Heavenly Father comfort you with the knowledge that as his parents you have accomplished one of His purposes for your earthly lives.
  • So sorry to learn of your loss! May the Lord comfort you and your family!
